herpes simplex 1

I have always had occurrences of cold sores on my lips.  Apparently obtaining the disease from my mom, since she also gets cold sores.  I had never taken time to research cold sores prier to this occurrence on my chin.  I really had no idea that cold sores are so contagious, and that they can be transmitted to other parts of your body.  And after reading some research on oral herpes simplex 1 and genital herpes simplex 2, I can see why this is.  Most people are not informed of the causes and potential danger of oral herpes simplex 1.  One thing that contributes for this under statement of the virus is the name society has placed for oral herpes simplex 1, a simple cold sore, or fever blister.  This miss conception is ultimately dangerous in the end.  I my self had no prier knowledge of the potential danger I was of transmitting it to others, or to other parts of my body, by not taking the proper precautions.  Ever since I read some of the research on herpes simplex 1, I have developed several worries of the consequences of my past negligence, due to lack of knowledge about the transmittance of herpes simplex 1.

Now for my question...  I have had oral sex with my partner, and I do not remember clearly if in any of those cases i might have had a cold sore, I mean I don't get them often, like most people about 2 to 3 times a year, but my question is....is it possible that I have already transmitted the virus to him, and the virus is dormant, and may later occur, or is it that once you get the virus do you automatically get an outbreak?

Thank you for reading, and I am truly surprise that there isn't more awareness of the fact that oral herpes simplex 1 and genital herpes simplex 2, are very much alike, and transmittable to other parts of the body.

At this point since herpes is on your mind, I recommend that both you and your partner go and get type specific herpes igg blood tests to see who has what.  Having hsv1 orally can make a hsv2 genital infection less obvious so you need to rule out hsv2 on yourself. You need to find out what your partner's hsv status is in general so that together you can decide if you want to start taking any precautions together or not.

Is it likely that you transmitted hsv1 to your partner's genital area through oral sex and he's had no symptoms at this point? Actually no. Most folks who contract hsv1 genitally, have very obvious and "classic" symptoms that are hard to miss since it usually occurs when they don't already have hsv1 orally to protect them.

Thanks for the advice grace.  I already made a doctors appointment.

You got me thinking on something.... I probably already gave my partner oral hsv 1, bc like i said there were no precautions taken, and maybe he just hasn't showed any symptoms.  So, that would probably make him less susceptible to getting genital hsv 1.  But any how, a text will still be necessary, just to be sure.

Yes, having hsv1 orally gives you significant protection against contracting hsv1 genitally. it can happen but it's very unlikely to.

Most adults have hsv1.it's very common but most folks who have it don't get obvious cold sores to know it. If your partner tests + for hsv1 on his test, no way to know when he contracted it from and from whom.
