Hi everyone,
I tested positive for IGM but negative for IGG 17 weeks prior to my HSV-1/ HSV-2 blood work which was negative. One gynecologist told me I was negative and was happy to not give me bad news. A few months later I returned for a check up and another gynecologist in the same practice told me Herpes can be dormant for months, even years and that she has never seen a case that goes from IGM postive that doesn't turn into herpes. Can someone help me?
I keep reading that after 3 months you should consider yourself negative but I don't know what to think for sure. I have not had any signs of an outbreak.
The herpes igm blood test is a poor test in general and should never be drawn on adults for the purpose of diagnosing a newly acquired herpes infection. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/248394 is a prior post by HHH that goes into this in more details for more info. The providers you are seeing who are still doing herpes igm testing should be doing some better homework :( You can even order them the herpes blood testing toolkit for under $3 from www.ashastd.org and give it to them as an early xmas present to better increase their knowledge - there's a whole section in there on why igm herpes testing isn't worthwhile.
You had a + igm and then follow up igg's are negative. If you were really infected, the infection would be reflected on the igg blood test a few months after being infected, you don't walk around infected for years and it isn't reflected on the tests.
If your igg blood test is negative at least 3 months post encounter, no reason to suspect that you really have herpes.
Thank you Grace. I did read all the previous posts but my doctor's response through me for a loop. I cried my eyes out for weeks during the original test. It is a horrible thing to put people through if the test is so unreliable. I also suffer from chronic fatigue which resulted from a mono episode years ago that never really went away. I read that Epstein Bar can through the test off. Maybe that's what happened? Who knows, but thank you so much for your response. This website is very helpful.
