actually no herpes doesn't dry out in a couple of seconds.
as for sharing sex toys - if you are sharing a sex toy with a partner during that encounter with them - there is a risk of transmission. If it's a sex toy that has been properly washed with soap and water in between use it's not an issue. So if you only have one sex toy and are sharing it with a partner who has hsv2 or who's status you aren't aware of, put a condom on it and change it in between using it on yourself and them. Otherwise just proper cleaning is fine to protect yourself. Also keep in mind that rubber/plastic sex toys will wear out over time and the material they are made out of will eventually start harboring bacteria which can cause bacterial infections. Properly maintaining your sex toys is always important no matter what each partner's std status is :)
