herpes?

by augustjuly3, May 02, 2009 01:06AM
For the past week+ I have had a light sore throat (mainly at night – otherwise, not too bad), and I noticed one enlarged tonsil as well.
Almost two weeks ago, I had licked a stripper's breast at a strip club, a couple of times, during lap dances. My fear is someone with herpes kissed her there first, and then I did.
I am wondering if my throat could be indicating herpes, after reading about it online. I also noticed a very small blemish on my lower lip, which has since gone away. At times, I have a very slight cough and shortness of breath as well… My sore throat started about 3 days after the strip club incident.
1. Is this possible? To contract it this way?
2. Why else could I have a sore throat and swollen tonsils, without any other symptoms? Are there other possibilties? I don't think it's mono.
3. If it could be herpes, could I expect bigger outbreaks (sores) later?
4. Also, if it were herpes, would I expect to have cold sores AND a sore throat during primary infection? (i.e. are they a package deal that get worse together?). Would it be weird for my blemish to go away and still have the sore throat?
I can't seem to find anything else online that would give me just a sore throat, without the sickness that normally goes along with it. I've never had something like this before.

Please let me know - Thanks.

No, your situation simply does not put you at any risk for acquiring herpes.  You could have a sore throat for lots of reasons at this time of the year - almost all of my patients do!  There are lots of viral infections going around.  Some patients are reporting 4-5 days of sore throat, then a cold comes on.  But herpes should come off of your list of worries, OK?

Okay –thanks. I was just concerned because this sore throat has been 11 days already (although it is very mild), and like I said I was afraid that someone who was infected licked her there soon before me. I’ve never had a sore throat like this before. Normally it’s quick and then turns into a cold. This one hasn’t bothered me much, but has been consistent for the past week and a half.

I’m having trouble finding info online that points to this being a “normal” sore throat (i.e. lasts a week and accompanied by a cold), which is why I’m concerned…

My doctor gave me antibiotics, incase it’s bacterial. I just started taking them today, but they haven’t seemed to do anything.

Thank again

Herpes would be the last thing on my list of possible diagnoses, given your symptoms.
