how can I know if I'm shedding virus?
I am a sexually active gay man and have had a very mild herpes that I got over 20 years ago. I have not had an outbreak in going on three years and the last few didn't even break the skin, I just had mild swelling in the place where I used to get my single lesion--at the top of my buttocks, near the base of my spine. I am very careful not to have sex with anyone when I either feel tingling or have any symptoms, and I take Valtrex regularly (1000mg daily). Is there any chance I could still infect a partner? I have not, to my knowledge, ever done so.

Yes you can still transmit the virus. The odds of it happening are greatly lowered with being on suppressive therapy but it's not zero risk.
