it's not common at all for cold sores to be due to hsv2. folks who do have hsv2 orally, tend not to have many recurrences at all on average and it doesn't shed much at all either so it's not often an issue for them.

how commen that fever blister or cold sore be cause from hsv2 and then be transmited to children from simple kissing in the mouth if the out break was at that time
it's far less likely to be once it hits the scab stage. it sheds some but not much. I'd still avoid kissing an infant under a year and sharing drinks with them until the scab fell off just to err on the side of caution. babies are more susceptible to oral herpes than adults are because of their immature immune system. the link I posted gives common sense info for dealing with oral herpes when children are in the house too.

you are very unlikely to transmit it that way but anytime you touch an active cold sore, you should try to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer just to err on the side of caution.
