is it herpes? =( confusing diagnosis

In september, i was diagnosed with genital herpes, but there was alot of confusion within the diagnoses. I am a High school senior and have only had sexual relations with 2 people. The first one, was my boyfirend of 2 years (we are currently broken up) and the second was about 2 weeks after which only consiser of oral sex (this was after we broke up.)

About 2 weeks after that, i started becoming very sick. i had a high fever, a swore throat, and an aching body. also i had a slight discomfort while peeing but it was not painful and didnt seem like anything at the time. After going to the doctor, they said i had strep throat. Assuming this diagnosis was accurate, i started taking my perscribed medication. As the days passed, i continued to feel sick and the pain while peeing started getting extreme. it got to the point were i was trying to go to the bathroom and i was in tears on the toilet because it stung so much. it felt like i was poring acid into  a raw cut. i checked out my area to see what was going on and it was very red with alot of brush burn looking areas. Almost as if it had rug burn. At that point i told my dad how painful it was to pee so he took me to the walk in to see what was going on. at that point, the NP took one look at my vagina and diagnosed it as herpes without checking for a yeast infection or any other possibility for the pain/irritation. that day she also took a culture test that came up negitive for any type of herpes. she explained to me that at the cultures might have been gone by the time she was able to take the test so it doesnt mean i dont have it. she had also said that the strep throat sypmtoms were probably related to herpes... at that point, i was absolutely devistated and in disbelief

After that, i made an appt with my gyno to get a second opinion. Because i got there a couple days later, my area was feeling and looking alittle better. she looked at it and said she saw no signs of genital herpes and it looked like a bad yeast infection. she took a culture test and found both a yeast infection AND a bactiral infection. she did make it clear though to be very careful and make sure if it happens again to get it tested right away.
then, as if i hadnt been through enough medical distress and misdiagnosis, my "strep" symptems were not getting better, so i went back to the doctors and found out i really had mono...

so the fever/flu like sypmtons i thought were part of a classic herpes outbreak was really mono, and herpes might not even be in the picture. i need advice. I feel like a lost puppy wondering around new york city. do my syptoms (symptoms) sound like herpes? i didnt have scabbing or anything, just open "Cuts" and brush burns. I want to get a blood test done but i am pretty sure id have the H1 if it was really herpes but ive read that about 90% of people have that orally anyways. when the oral accured, the boy had no obvious coldsores on his mouth (alothough i have been told that sheading could have occured.) i got it all to heal up by taking a yeast infection pill and soaking once a day and it hasnt happened again. but i am starting to feel a slight irritation down there like i first did before i thought it was a problem, i dont know why that is happening or if it could be herpes again. so far there are no blisters or bumps or cuts or brush burns. your opionon on this diagnosis will be very apprisiated. thank you for helping me out. i just want to figure this out. :(

It's unfortunate that the first provider you saw didn't do a lesion culture anyways.

at this point not too much you can do. Could you have had strep throat, a genital bacterial infection, a yeast infection and also genital herpes going on? Well yes sometimes you do get hit that hard with that much. You also can get lesions from vaginitis. You also can get lesions in the genital area from ebv ( the cause of mono ).  

At this point you can try getting a herpes blood test to see what it shows now but if it's hsv1 +, unless you have a history of cold sores, no way to know if it's oral or genital hsv1. If it's hsv2+ then you pretty much know where it is ( almost always genital ).  If your blood test turns out to be only hsv1+ or is completely negative, just follow up with lesion cultures if you get a return of genital symptoms again.  Since your last encounter was all oral sex, hsv1 would be the most likely culprit for genital herpes if you didn't already have hsv2 from your 1st partner. did any of that make sense?  I just woke up from a nap and not sure I'm awake enough to have phrased that all right....lol.

was the lesion culture what she tested with the first time?
what she did was got a Qtip and got a sample from were it was most painful. Im sorry, im not completely farmiliar with the whole procces and what is generally done.  The lady i had didnt make me feel like she knew what she was doing although i might be wrong. Ive spent alot of time looking it up but everything i find seems to be repeditive and not holding the answers ive been looking for.... which ended up bringing me here.

told you I wasn't fully awake yet - didn't even catch on to that she did do a lesion culture but it was negative.  sorry about that.  Yes, the lesion culture was what she did with the q tip.

You won't get very fast answers right now but hopefully in a few months you'll have this all straightened out at least from the stand point of do you or do you not also have genital herpes on top of everything else.

one last thing, do you think it would be safe to say i dont have genital herpes if i dont have a break out within the next year or so and also test possitive for HSV1?

well actually no you can't say that your hsv1 is definitely oral if you don't have another genital ob in the next year unfortunately.  Hsv1 genitally on average doesn't reoccur very often. About 1/2 of folks who contract it, never get another recognizable ob.

I would just like to say i had a blood test taken and just got the results back... i am negitive for both the HSV1 and HSV2 :) i would like to thank you so much for helping me and giving me the information you gave me. It really helped me through this long and confusing diagnosis. Thanks again :)

If your symptoms reoccur, be seen promptly for further work up to try to figure out what is going on.
