jock itch or herpes?

I have had itching on my penis for a little over a week now.  There is dry, red skin in some areas on the shaft and then on the head.  It really does not itch "all day", just when I touch it, or shower.  I did have oral sex with another guy several weeks ago, but nothing else.  Is this jock itch, or worse? I have been putting an over the counter cream on it and it does seem to be getting better, even though it is slow.  I do not want to go to the Dr. just yet.  Hoping someone else can give me some guidance.  Thanks

This isn't herpes.

If this has gone on for a week without change, you should probably get it checked. Also, don't ever self-treat UNTIL you've seen a doctor. If there is something going on, the doc needs to be able to look at it, culture it, or whatever, without your having put anything on it that could possibly change it.
