long lasting herpes outbreak

by cerebral, Aug 06, 2008 12:10PM
I've had genital herpes for 5 years. I started taking Valtrex daily 4.5 years ago and have not noticed an outbreak since then. My initial outbreaks were not on my penis but in my pubic hair region and resembled pimples. Recently I have had an outbreak that has lasted much longer than I thought it would (a little over two weeks) and has been more widespread than they used to be (more pimples). When the outbreak started, I increased my daily dose of Valtrex. I normally do not get pimples of any kind in that area. I was under the impression that outbreaks after 5 years wouldn't last this long and would be less severe, especially given the Valtrex. Does anyone have a comment on this situation. I'm a healthy male heterosexual, late 30s, and single.

This doesn't sound like an outbreak, especially if you've been on daily medication. You might want to see your provider about it.

I totally agree with waring.  How did they originally diagnose you as having herpes?

Thank you for the comments. Regarding the first comment, the pimples are very much like those from my initial outbreaks 5 years ago. I had used a condom and apparently this is why the outbreak was not on my penis but in the genital area that was not protected. I did not have anything resembling this outbreak before the initial outbreak. The doctor took a sample from the initial pimples and the test revealed HSP-2. I had 3 or 4 outbreaks of the same kind over the next few months and started taking Valtrex. I have not had an outbreak until now, about 4.5 years later. I made an appointment with my doctor to discuss the matter, but any comments or suggestions are welcome.

just wanted to make sure you had actual testing done and not just a looksee as a way of diagnosing herpes.

lesions in that area can be due to herpes, bacterial infections, fungal infections etc.  Usually if they don't clear up within 2 weeks and with antivirals then it's not due to herpes or something is further complicating it ( like the above mentioned infections ).

( fyi it's hsv2, not hsp - that's a whole totally different rash! )

I'm very curious to as to how long the initial outbreak lasted.
