my partner has herpes but I don't

I feel paranoid that I will catch this, I am involved with a great man who was upfront with me and told me he had the virus from the start.  I love him and feel guilty for even feeling like this. What are the chances of me contracting this virus when he isn't in an outbreak? He has been upfront with me when he has had one and we take precauctions.  I know it's not the end of the world if I do get it but would like to know everything I can to protect myself from getting it. Help....

Alot of the studies we have and the stats we give are based on two factors 1) Type 2) Location.  Can you tell us what type he has and where it is located at?

Also have you been tested with a HSV type specific blood test? HSV-1 orally is common even among people who don't recall ever having a cold sore.

Overall the risk of herpes during a non-outbreak is going to be low risk.  Proper precuations wouldn't involve sexual contact during any outbreaks and waiting for them to heal fully (the skin returning to normal).  Is your partner on daily suppresive therapy?
