negative, positive, then negative...HSV2

by Neesey, Nov 04, 2009 12:53PM
Hello,
I will get right to the point. Had a one month relationship with a guy who I feel may be at risk for anything due to his lifestyle..we had unprotected sex.....stupid, stupid, stupid I know. Totally dumb, but anyway, I was diagnosed with my first yeast infection a couple days after the first encounter, got diflucan one treatment, still felt irritated down there. Did Monistat treatment, still felt irritated. I have been to numerous doctors who have examined me inside and out over a period of 4 months, I felt like a neurotic freak. All STD tests came back negative at least 3 times over a period of 4 months, I was tested for Herpes 3 times by blood tests, first one was negative for HSV 1 and HSV 2. The second blood test was neg for HSV 1 but positve for HSV 2. The Third blood test was negative for both again! I have NOT had any sores, flu like symptoms, fever, swollen glands in groin. It has been 6 months and my vaginal area still has a slight burning, numbing and tingling. It is constant. My MD is telling me that I do not have HSV2 but that it could have been a false positive on the second blood test.  Is that true? Could my constant burning, irritated feeling, numbing and tingling really be just anxiety about the whole encounter with this guy? He swore up and down that he was clean and never had anything, but how do I know. I am at my wits end...tomorrow I go back to my GYN for my 6 month HIV testing, which I am having anxiety about as well. I wish that I would have been smarter for being a happy, healthy 28 year old in the first place. BTW, I am in counseling d/t my MD thinking it would help, she probably thinks I am crazy for all the appts I went to! Please, can anyone help? Can you have a false positive HSV 2 test?

Oh, thank you so much for the reply! It does seem strange though that I have the constant burning and irritation, doesnt it? I am just scared that they are missing something. I am living in misery everyday with this burning and irritation! My gyno says, "everything looks normal."

Is it possible to have a false positive on HSV1?

Yes it is possible to have a false HSV1..but less likely than a false HSV2.

Neesey..I hear you about Doctors...I would go to a different set of doctors and don't mention that the other one said "everything looks normal"....once you tell them that, they get fixated on that and try to make you think its all in your mind....

Thank you! But, I totally understand that! After the 2nd doctor I started fresh and they still couldn't find anything, My MD had all of my records sent to her and started all the tests again as if I had never had them done before. She told me that her sister has had HSV2 for 30 years and only had one outbreak.. She actually treated me like a human being with feelings. Thank you so much for your input.
