oral hvs2

I gave oral sex to a woman over four months ago, no other sex acts were preformed. One week after the encounter I developed a small cut on my lower lip and three days after that a red patch on my chin. I had other symptoms such as itching around my mouth and tingling lips. Anyhow, I have never developed any sores but the small cut has not gone away and the itching around my mouth continues. I have tested positive for HVS1 from a blood test back in 2003 but not sure where since I have never had an outbreak. I went to my GP and he put me on 500 mg of Valtrex twice daily just to knock it out if it was hvs1 orally. Well the meds had no effect. I then had a ELISA blood test done after 11 weeks and it came back positive for HVS1 and neg for HVS2. I have heard that blood tests are not 100% accurate but what is. So, finally went to a dermatologist, he looked at my condition visually and said no hvs. Again, I have heard that visual inspection is really not a good diagnosis, so I am still in doubt. He said it was a mild yeast infection and put me on some hydrocortisone/iodoquinol 1% cream. It seemed to work on the chin but had no effect on my lip. I am still getting itching symptoms on face along with jaw pain. So, the million dollar question is, since my symptoms have persisted for 4 months and I had a neg blood test for hvs2 and I didn’t respond to Valtrex, can this be oral hvs2? All logic says no but I still can’t stop feeling that this is a mild case of herpes on my mouth/face. So much so I haven’t kissed anyone in for months.
Without a lesion to swab will I ever get piece of mind?
I would love to get an educated third party opinion on this matter. Thanks in advance for your help.

your wife has hsv1 as do you.  no reason to think you have hsv2 orally on top of it.

http://www.ashastd.org/herpes/herpes_learn_oralherpes.cfm  is a terrific link with down to earth info about how to reduce transmission of oral herpes to children. you and your wife should both read it so you can reduce the risk of transmitting hsv1 to your children.

Thanks for your response. At times I do feel like this is aniexty and other times the symptoms seem too real to ignore. I have stopped taking Valtrex, only took it for ten days. Jaw issue is probably what you think, TMJ. I was able to self massage this away for the most part. I just have thoughts of transfering herpes to my wife, kids, eyes ect.
It just seems all to coincidental. I guess the mind is a powerful thing.

I read through your posts to Dr Hook and it seems like anxiety is a big issue for you.   Despite reassurances as to the low risk of hsv2 from Dr Hook, no response to valtrex for your symptoms and negative blood testing, you still can't let go of this it appears.

so what do you do now?  Well for starters, if you are still on valtrex, stop it. No reason to be taking it.   Itching for 4 months absolutely is not a symptom of oral herpes.  You would have clear breaks in symptoms for weeks at a time with herpes.   Continue to follow up with the dermatologist for the itching.  Pay attention to what is going on with your jaw too. Are you clenching it when you are awake and asleep?  as your wife is you are grinding your teeth a lot in your sleep too. odds are the stress of all of this is making you cause the pain in your jaw because of  not relaxing enough. You might want to try a facial massage from a professional therapeutic massage therapist.   they are trained to listen and feel the muscles to help you narrow down if tense muscles are part of your problem. it also feels really good :)

You really have no reason to think you have contracted any std from performing oral on a stranger. As Dr Hook pointed out already - the overall odds of such are very low and none of your symptoms sound like an oral std. don't confuse the guilt of the encounter with real risk.
