outbreaks lasting months at a time

In Sept of last year I tested positive for herpes and for the past 10 months I've had the longest outbreak ever. The blisters will heal then others will pop up, this has been going on for the past 10 months. I know that an outbreak should last about 3 weeks, I then start to clear up. But then it's time for my monthly period and the outbreak starts all over again. So I get 2 to 3 days with no blisters at all then bam, the outbreak is back. Like I said this has been going on for 10 months and hello, like anyone else I would love to have sex. I don't know what to do, if there is anything I can do. I am willing to do anything at this point for the pain to be gone for awhile. Can someone please help me.

Yeah those bacterial infections can really be boogers :(  Been there, done that!  Since hubby already has hsv2 it doesn't really matter as long as you are comfortable when you have sex.   I say - stay on suppressive therapy for awhile to keep the herpes part out of it.  If you start having frequent symptoms again - it's back to the gyn to see if the bacteria is back or not.  I know it's a pain in the butt to keep going back to be seen frequently but sometimes you have to do it until you finally break the cycle.

Now back to the bedroom for you to keep having fun!!!! :D

I am confused, how will I know when I'm having an outbreak again? I mean with this whole bad bacteria infection and all. I forget the name he called the infection but they look similar to herpes outbreaks, not a boil but more of a blister. Now I don't know if I will be able to tell the 2 apart.

OK Grace, Thursday my doc's office calls me and tells me my 2 swabs came back pos for bacteria infection neg for herpes. My blood tests: HSV1 neg and HSV2 pos. I asked what the numbers were and she said there is no numbers just a pos or neg. So there is my answer. She told me that the doc believes that when I got my first outbreak (Sept of last year) that I got this bacteria infection and got the 2 confused. The bacteria infection is gone now thanks to my meds and Me and my husband have had SEX woooohoooo. But he is killing me. It's like I'm 16 again down there or he is black one...LMAO. Yes lube is GREAT!!

Yes I think he should too but you know how men are about going to the doctor. I may just have to make him since all I have been through this past 13 months. And yes my carpal tunnel will get better now that I know my doctor along with myself were stupid when it came to the results on my 1st test a little over a year ago.   Oh and Grace are you from Wisco or some place north? I ask cuz you say eh a lot and I know Wisco ppl say that a lot LOL, just asking. (We lived in Wisco for a few months on the road with my husbands job one time.)
Peace,
Angela

Yeah the carpal tunnel syndrome isn't going to get any worse in a couple of more days eh?  I think once you two get to the bottom of all this you should treat yourself to a nice weekend away somewhere!!!

Your hubby really should pursue additional testing. He very well might have hsv1 genitally if he's only had that few ob's in all that time.

When I talked to my husband and asked him what kind of herpes it is that he has, he told me "I guess the same as ours". That's when I told him all my results came back negative he was in shock because of the problem I have been having for a year. He told me he just went to the doctor and had him check him out because something  wasn't right down there and the doctor told him it was herpes. He was never tested. He has had only 6 outbreaks in 18 years. (The person he was with at that time had herpes so he knew he got it from her. And all he knew was she had herpes but not what kind. He has no way of getting ahold of her to ask.)
No he is not on any meds but has asked me to keep getting mine filled so he can start taking them. I know he should go to the doctor himself and get tested and get the meds on his own. But ya know how guys are.
We don't plan on having sex until the other test results come back (Monday, I believe.) It's been a a year already, what's another week.

HHV 6 is the cause of roseola in infants.  I have absolutely no idea why you were tested for it.  I'm guessing someone checked the wrong box on the form actually :(

Bacterial skin infections can be a booger to clear up :(  I"ve had more trouble with bv down yonder than my herpes has ever been and my herpes has never read the handbook to know how to act.  Since you are going to be on antibiotics and scrubbing away your protective bacteria down yonder - perhaps send for the free sample of femdophilus from the jarrow website to replace the "good" bacteria down yonder during this time while you are at it.

You said your husband has hsv2 too right? I also am assuming he's not on daily suppressive therapy?  I'd talk to him about going on it since apparently you don't have hsv2 after all. Having a bacterial infection would make you more prone to contracting it though so him suppressing his hsv2 infection would be in your best interest for awhile.  I"d also consider using condoms for a couple of weeks even after you are done treating your skin infection. You don't want to be passing this back and forth!

Grace I'm so confused. I went and got my test results from the first blood test I had done Aug 31, 2006. Here goes...
Human Herpes Virus 2.71
                               Unit:IV
                               (Note)
Reference Interval: Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) Ab, IgG
0.89 IV or less....Negative: No significant level of detectable HHV-6 IgG antibody.
0.90 - 1.10 IV.....Equivocal: Questionable presence of HHV-6 IgG antibody. Repeat testing in
10 -14 days may be helpful.
1.11 IV or greater..Positive: IgG antibody to HHV-6 dected, which may indicate current or past
                                              infection.

The best evidence for current infection is a significant change on two appropriately timed specimens, which both tests are done in the same laboratory at the same time.

So I have HHV-6, what does that mean? All this time I thought I had HSV-2. I'm confused, really.

My doctor ran other tests and they all came back negitive, even the swabs of my blisters.

What my problem really is, is Hidradenitis suppurativa, bacterial infections that will not go away unless treated. He gave me Cephalexin 500gm which I will take 4 a day for 10 days. Also, he had me pick up some over the counter antisptic skin cleanser called Hibiclens and told me to use it twice a day.
He told me to stop taking the Valtrex because I was wasting my money.

The tests he ran on me were negative like I said before, even the herpes test. This doctor only tests for HSV-1 and 2. Today he took 2 more swabs from these blisters and sent me to the lab to get blood tests on HSV-1 and 2. I should get those back next week.

So what is HHV-6? And what do I do about it? Now I don't know what to do. The doctor told me it was great that me and my husband have not had sex in a year because we didn't know what was really going on with me, when the whole time we thought it was HSV-2. But he told me to have as much sex as I wanted. I think I will wait another week until I get the other results in.
Again, this HHV-6 is worring me because I know nothing about it. Please help me with some answeres.
Thanks so much,
Angela

You too need to pursue a further work up. Usually when suppressive therapy isn't working - it's because it's more than just herpes going on.  Go see your gyn and get a thorough work up - testing for yeast and bacterial infections. Get your genital skin checked to see if it's thining and needs topical estrogen to help strengthen it. Also lube, lube and more lube. it's well worth a good quality lube for sex to help protect our tender genital skin.

You are so right!  I sounds like you and I are going through a very similiar situation!  Like you, every month I have this outbreak when I menstruate!  Still taking the meds every day though and though it does help there's nothing I can do to stop the outbreak when the period is triggering it.  But once it does clear up and I have sex with my husband.. BAM!  another outbreak.  so frustrating...

OK I got in to see my OBGYN this past Friday (Sept 28th), she said that it does not look like "classic herpes", I don't know how to take that. She is running 8 different tests on me to find out what is going on with me and promises that she will get to the bottom of it. She did some swabs along with the pap and sent me to have blood work done. She will not be sure until the tests come back but she feels that I have some "bad" type of bacteria infection that is not letting the valtrex work the way it should. I have an appointment on Oct 8th to find out the results of the tests, I will post then to let ya know what's going on with me. (It only took 3 months to get in to see the doc...that's a long wait)

If you are still having this many problems - I'd haul yourself back to the doctor to see if your  bv cleared up just to err on the side of caution. Also I had recommended that you start off on the valtrex twice a day because you'll need the higher dose with having monthly ob's.  More than 9 ob's a year and you need either the 1gm daily dose or the 500mg twice a day dose. I recommend the twice a day dose for now until things settle down and then give the once daily 1gm dose a try.   If you continue to have blisters like this even on the higher dose then it's time for an even further work up to make sure that what you are attributing to herpes is actually even herpes going on too.

And thank you for taking the time to keep adding these questions to your original post - it is soooooooo helpful to be able to review everything. I can't even remember what I ate last night for dinner most times let alone recall all the details for everyone over so many months!!

Oh and sweetie - take a whole pitcher of lemon drop martini's and call me in the morning - you deserve them!! ( yes I really have a hankerin for them this week...he he he )

Ok i started taking Valtrex 500m once a day in early Aug I'm still having outbreaks. A few days ago the blisters were all almost gone for the first time in a year and just when I thought the OB was gone...bam it's back. I'm at the point where I am about to lose it fo real. I can't masturbate let alone have sex. What do I need to do??? I want my old self back again. I take meds for stress and to that, I don't have much stress in my life except for the long OB. It's so hard to forget that I have herpes cuz it's alway there. I know you told me to get to the doc for a full work up but I'm too scared. I can't have any other STD'S cuz I've been tested and been with the same person (my husband) for over 3 years now and I know with all that I have he's only been with me in the past 3 years. I just don't know what to do and I'm at the end of my rope with this. HELP PLEASE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

can I be on your insurance? he he he

Look into getting it filled 3 months worth at a time. sometimes you save a copay that way. I fill mine thru my company's mail order pharmacy.

Also you can use the valtrex $10 coupons each time you refill it too!

Yes I understand - didn't even catch the typo the first time....he he he

BV is just nasty sometimes honey!!! I hate it with a passion :(  you probably have been walking around with it for awhile now and it's been irritating your genital area and causing your herpes to be more active.  Clinical studies have found that bv causes you to shed hsv more often.  Get the bv under control and hopefully the herpes will settle down too. Suppressive therapy will also help quite a lot.  Don't hesitate to return to your gyn in another month if you aren't feeling much better. Sometimes it takes several rounds of medication to get bv gone for good :(  I like a product called femdophilus by jarrow myself.  It helps to replace the "good" bacteria in our genital area.  Just if you use it - keep it in the fridge.  You can take it daily and when you have a bv flare up - take two a day for 5 days.
