question about HSV1

by morphish21, Aug 13, 2009 11:21AM
About 7 weeks ago I had unprotected vaginal sex with a girl I met at a bar. I had no symptoms or outbreaks that led me to think I had a STD, but because I am very parinoid person I decided to get tested( I was scared I had HIV) anyway I got tested last week and got the results back today. I tested positive for HSV-1....when I asked what that was they said like a cold sore. Now I have had cold sores since high school when i wasn't sexually active. So my question is do I have gential herpes or did I just test positive because I have cold sores. They have always been on my lip.

yes cold sores are HSV1..since since u've had it since highschool it would make sense to test positive for that..
HSV-1 is different from HSV-2..which is the more serious genital herpes.

I want to thank you for taking the time to answer my question. So you are saying that I most likley did not contract gential herpes from this one time encounter? The positive test resut for HSv1 is from having cold sores and I don't have gential herpes?

Thanks!!!

You already knew you had hsv1 due to your history of cold sores.

If you really want to cover your bases, repeat your hsv2 igg at the 16 week post encounter mark for it to be more accurate. the risk of acquiring hsv2 from a one time encounter is pretty low.
