resiquimod gel?

Hey Grace,

I was wondering if you knew anything about this topical treatment which showed substantial promise in phase II trials before apparently failing in phase III trials.  Is it used for anything today or available anywhere?

definitely get confirmatory testing done - don't wait for a recurrence of symptoms. This really is worthwhile.

That's a much older version of the handbook and not the current version. It showed results from the earlier study.

I might get another test.  I was waiting for another outbreak that I could get swabbed since I figured that would nail things down most clearly.

My partner has tested negative.

Well, resiquimod is in this version:

http://www.westoverheights.com/genital_herpes/handbook/downloadthehandbook/updatedherpeshandbookenglishedition-1.attachment/attachment/herpes_handbook_TW_7-22-07.doc

"Resiquimod is an immune modulator whose sister drug, imiquimod or Aldara, has shown good success in treating genital warts.  One study showed some limited benefit while using resiquimod for treating genital herpes."

It actually seemed like a pretty substantial benefit in the study that Terri Warren published.

did you ever follow up with more testing since you had a low positive, questionable symptoms and no + lesion culture?  It really is worthwhile to pursue a herpes WB or biokit hsv2 igg to confirm your status.

did your partner ever get tested?

no I don't  believe the handbook mildly recommends it.

I have no idea of the cost of it. I assume it isn't cheap. You can call your local pharmacy and ask for a cost estimate out of curiosity.

Hi sadgirl I haven't had any additional outbreaks (at least not clearly identifiable ones).  I still believe what I said before.

So it is available because it is approved for something else?  Is it expensive if bought this way?  I believe the herpes handbook still mildly recommends it.

it's available by prescription.  it can be used off label but as you already know it pretty much tanked in the larger studies so it's really not worthwhile.

Hi there,

I remember your story on the expert forum well.  May I ask how things are going?  Did you have any additional outbreaks?  If so, did the location change?  I always remember HHH's advice regarding location as a possible indication if it was a previous or recent infection.  I always wondered what happened.
