From my understand it's the soft tissue that you mainly have to worry about. Can we get personal for a moment? How old are you? I'm a germaphob but it's an STI that you can be born with not just contract. And education is key. If you're that worried about getting it than you need to live in a bubble. I've spent my life trying to be careful and learned that you can have it without possible symptoms and unless you ask your doctor to test you. You may never know one way or the other. So get tested to know for sure and then get your future partner tested and that way you will know for sure. I had a hsv1 breakout this year before that my last outbreak was 16 years ago. All that means is that I have a very health immune system. And I had hsv1 breakouts when I was a young girl before 10 years of age. I didn't have any outbreaks as a preteen or teenager. So stop worrying and live your life. Find Some one nice to love and be smart about your health choices good luck.

If you start checking everyones hands before shaking youll be doing something more from a phobia than anything else. Its really not any concern. Its mostly contracted in the dental profession

Hi, the likely hood of contracting herpes from shaking hands would be as close to zero risk as it could by. Nothing at all to be concerned about.
