they've found that certain genetic markers are present in folks who are more likely to have more frequent recurrences than others as well as some other chronic inflammatory issues. everyone seems to shed the virus about the same basic amount, just some folks are more prone to obvious ob's than others.
how does genetics play a role in outbreaks?
the antivirals only have an effect on the virus when it is active. When you are taking daily suppressive therapy, the virus is still activating at the same rate it does when you are not on daily suppressive therapy just that you have active medication that disrupts the viral replication cycle so that it is less likely to cause shedding on the skin as well as obvious lesions.
grace
I spent a long time finding this thread from Dr. HHH one of the MH STD Experts. It talks about how the antiviral works. Might find it helpful.

how exactly do antivirals work if the virus hides dormant in the nerve cells? how does the medicine "reach" it?
15% of days on average- 15 out of every 100 days total.
i know the virus sheds, and i know its not everyday, but at what rate?
It's as high as 60% in some studies.
would you know what percentage of gay men carry hsv2?
even though both viruses are in the herpes family, that's about all they have in common. they are working on both vaccines and theracines for hsv too.
i read about the new vaccine that prevents herpes zoster(shingles) for up to 55%
if thet can develop a vaccine like that, why not for hsv2 if its in the same family of virus?

don't know what you are reading dear but it's a very bad website :(
the rates of resistance to herpes antivirals are still the same as they were 20+ years ago - less than 1% for folks who are otherwise healthy. you don't over time become resistant to the meds or anything just because you are using them long term. we have info on people taking acyclovir for 25 years now non-stop without issue.
no , ob's don't get longer either over time or more painful.
happy new year
i read last night on article online stating that a person on suppresive therapy will eventually have a resistance to the medicine and outbreaks will be longer and more painful, although any of mine were never painful at all and i have been on suppressive therapy for a year now with very good success
aveeno cold sore ointment is helpful but you have to apply it every 2 hours while awake. it's a few bucks cheaper than abreva which barely got fda approval to say that it heals cold sores faster than using placebo ( only heals a cold sore less than a day sooner than placebo so not worth the money they charge for that teeny tube ).
also steeping a tea bag and using it for a compress is helpful.
if they have a regular doc, they can just ask them to call in a prescription for them too.
this question is for someone i know who has what a i presume to be hsv1,who always gets those fever sores around the lips after having a fever, this person has never been tested for hsv.but is there and OTC medicine to control or help with the sores untill the go to their doctor?
you have no reason to remain celibate because of herpes!!!!
no sex and the risk of transmission in general is too low to worry about.
odds are the person who transmitted hsv2 to you had no idea they had it to be honest. Acceptance and moving forward are much more beneficial than trying to place blame on someone though it's hard to get to that point I know. The rates of hsv1 and hsv2 infection in gay males are fairly high in general. Have you considered any herpes dating sites at all even? Also remember that hsv2 increases the risk of acquiring hiv so make sure your partners are getting tested for that too .
keep asking questions/venting! herpes is never, ever a reason to sit at home alone!!
how about male and female rates? it's all connected with sex so why are there different transmission rates for male/female and male/male?
i havent veen with anyone in over a year because i feel so disgusting with this yet i dont want to spend the rest of my life celibate.
how i wish i can get my hamds on the person who did this to me
we don't have transmission stats for same sex relationships unfortunately.
what are the chances of transmission to a person if one is on daily suprressive(valtrex) to another person,,,with just foreplay,,no intercourse or oral...male to male
thanks
thanks,,thats what i assumed too
you won't get herpes symptoms in a few hours.
odds are he has something else going on. about the only thing that will cause sores in a few hours is an allergic reaction.
happy labor day,,,
i was watching a news show yesterday about a grandmother who was in a hotel with her grandson,,and she caught him inflating a used condom he found in the bathroom,,,of course she flipped out and took the proper steps ,,,
now they say he might have contracted oral herpes and that he had sores all inside his mouth after a few hours.
Is this possible?
women contract hsv2 more often, men have more ob's.
we gals have different plumbing than the menfolk do so we are more likely to have lesions where urine will flow over them and cause us pain then the guys do.
