Help.
Heat found, no initial injury, lame day one before the swollen udder, heat all the way up, I thought scratches, infection possible, cellulitus (sp?), hosing now, treating with antibiotics and bute, seems to move better after walking.

Any thoughts, would be appreciated.

For me I use basic Soap and LOTS of  warm water. Do not leave any residue this will make her itch! If she is a sensitive mare I might call my local vet for a sedation drug for her for your saftey. Better yet just have the vet do this for you. If she is nursing then ask your vet. I do my mares if I use them allot or are stalled every 6 weeks other than that every two months. I would not over do it. Betadine for the outside every three months is ok it tends to Dry the udder if used to much.
Best of luck.

There are also commercial products available if you prefer. Sanisheath is for boys but I find it works well on the girls too. My old mare use to love being scratched between her teats. she would actually pick up her hind leg and shake it like a dog w/ her lips all pursed up!(Imiss her, she was put down in 06)Does your mare have a large udder? They almost seem easier to keep clean. The smaller shriveled ones seem to get more junk caught in the middle. Also if you live in a cold climate (no bathes this time of year here!) or if your mare isn't that dirty and doesn't need a regular scrubbing sensative skin, or if she trys to kick your head off when you get near her w/ the hose, unscented babywipes used w/ regular grooming program workes nice too. They are also nice for underside/dock of tale.

Is your mare curtrently nursing?  IF so, please contact your vet about this.  Otherwise, in my non-nursing or lactating mares inn the past, I have used only water and an antibacterial soap  (i.e. Betadine Surgical Scrub) or only just water.  I make sure to soak the areas well with warm water on gentle flow (I also do the vulva area and anus), put a bit of the Betadine on a soft wash cloth and wash all areas gently removing all debris, sweat, and gunk.  DO NOT CLEAN INSIDE ANY AREA>..stay on outside regions.  I am not sure how your mare will react, some are very sensitive of having these parts touched, so be light, and be careful not to get kicked!!! RINSE WELL....RINSE AGAIN !!  Make sure there is no soap residue left at all....otherwise this could cause infection. Please check and clean about once monthly.  Sweat, debris, grass, shavings, etc. can all get trapped in these parts.
