Abnormal Pap

Abnormal Pap

In Aug of 2009 I tested positive for HPV thus I had an abnormal pap (Mild dysplasia),  Within the next few week I had colposcopy and biopsy done which both came back normal. in Nov. I returned and had another abnormal pap.  At this time my doctor proposed I have the LEEP procedure done.  After doing research I declined and just decided to wait and see if things would get better. In Feb. of 2010 I went back to my doctor and still had the same abnormal pap (no change), and he also did a colposcopy & biopsy which again came back normal.  After this my doctor insissted that I have the LEEP proceedure done.  I declined then in May I had another pap done & itcame back abnormal.  Now having to make a decision I decieded to get the opinion of another doctor. Within the same month I consulted with another doctor & he suggested since it hasnt changed it could be my choice to wait and see if it goes away.  He stated that once I had the same milddysplasia for 2 years then I should proceed with the LEEP procedure. He suggested I come back in 6 months, again that was in May.  In November I went back and my pap was still the same. So my question is I am going to have to make a decision soon if I have another abnormal pap, is this something I should go ahead and do? I am 22 years old never had children and never been pregnate.  What are the side affects if I do have the procedure?

I am not in a position to tell you about the effects of the procedure, but I do wonder: why would you ignore the advice of your first doctor then and why are you considering going against your doctor's suggestion you get a LEEP procedure now?

From what I understand, those that go through the LEEP procedure have had overwhelmingly positive results, although there are those on this board that can verify this or not.  (With that said, be sure to take into account that on this forum, the majority of people are those with present or ongoing issues... the number of people who undergo a number of procedures and never have any problems again have no reason to frequent a discussion forum.)

Live in a small town for one, first reason why I was a bit skeptical. Second  it didnt sit right with me my current doctor was not upfront with me from the begining reguarding my situation that i will not speak of.  Thirdly, when I went and saw a group of specialist they were concerned with his (My first doctors) decisions as well. Thanks im just here asking questions getting others opinion. If i would have know I was going to be criticize I wouldnt have made a post. Guess this will be my first and last (Shrugs) Thanks anyway for your input

My apologies if you took my post as criticism, but please know that wasn't my intention.  I can understand your skepticism of taking your doctor's suggestions for the reasons you speak of, but if your question is whether you should get the LEEP done and you are seeking input on the forum, then my suggestion would be that you should at least consider the procedure.  If you opt not to go for it, of course, that's your prerogative- but I'd warn against outright dismissal of a procedure which I understand to be extremely effective at addressing the problems that you may encounter with your HPV infection.
