HPV? Please help. I don't get it.

Toward the end of last year, I recently learned that I'd contracted herpes from the guy I'd been dating for a few months. (Yeah! What fun.)  A month or so after that I noticed a strange, soft, flesh colored stalk looking growth just inside my vagina.  I flipped out and ran to my gyn thinking warts.  She examined me, but said the growth didn't look like any type of STD to her, and she concluded that I had a skin tag, which she assures me is harmless.  I was on cloud 9 with happiness after hearing that as you can imagine, but then I noticed a couple of small, flesh colored bumps under my tongue in my mouth, and I've been having a mild sore throat almost constantly since getting the herpes.  Doc looked at my throat (but not at the bumps under my tongue), and said he didn't see anything out of ordinary.

At this point, I don't know what to think or how to proceed.  Can someone please tell me if my situation sounds like warts to you?  Should I ask my gyn to remove and biopsy the "skin tags" to be sure, or can I trust her opinion?  Any chance the bumps under my tongue/sore throat are related to herpes and not to warts.  I never had these problems with my throat until the herpes / "skin tag" episode and I feel confused, depressed and scared.  Thanks.

All of you need to keep pressing the issue until a doctor will listen and perform the tes you ar requesting... I was also told i had a skin tag and that answer just didn't sit well with me so i went to a total of 3  doctors asked for it to be removed, 2 of them told me no it's just a skin tag don't worry about it . The 3rd doctor said the same thing but she was willing to remove it and send it to pathology just to confirm... I missed a phone call from the doctor early saturday morning, she left a message saying i need to come into the office monday morning to discuss the pathology report.... I am happy a doctory finallu listened to me but i am worried about the results. ( I am married for 8yrs now and have only been with him )  Please keep trying to find a doctor that will listen, It's your body and u know when something is not right.. I will update you monday.

First off, thanks all for your comments.  I really appreciate it.  I'll try to respond to everyone's questions, so please excuse the long post.

Soscared, I have heard about fimbriated folds and hoped that was my problem, but I don't think so. Mine aren't actually located on my tongue; they're in a cluster on the floor of my mouth below my tongue.  Also, the fact that they appeared at the same time my vaginal "skin tags" appeared which was only a few weeks after a sexual encounter seems too coincidental to me.  Also, a week hasn't passed since that time that my throat doesn't bother me in some minor way.

flex763, where are your growths?  In the genital or oral area?  I have them in both locations.  From my research, which has been extensive, no, genital warts rarely appear in the mouth, but it also isn't limited to people with HIV as many seem to believe.  If you have anything going on in your body which impedes your immune system (i.e. diabetes, major surgery, hidden infections in your mouth), you can contract oral warts.  I've certainly had a number of health concerns over the past couple of years, and can imagine what a difficult time my immune system would have coping with 2 viruses contracted at the same time (herpes and hpv).

Additionally, I feel that my concerns are valid as I'm a smoker and drink socially.  Whatever is going on in my mouth certainly isn't normal oral anatomy, and hasn't gone away since September of last year. The area in question also burns a bit from time to time.

Puzzle, I looked for the pic online, but wasn't able to find it again.  I'll keep looking.  I probably won't hear back on a biopsy for a month or so as I'll need to make an appointment for them to look at it first and then another for biopsy before awaiting the results.  I'll keep you posted.

Hey there, just reading one of your related posts and I have just recently, from a couple of days ago, have seen what looks like on google as growths and so has my partner.
But what i don't understand is how I've not had this before until now?
Also I'm worried about any oral contact with my partners penis as the growths in the mouth but he assured me its not contagious into the mouth. Just wondering whether your comment about the lumps in your mouth would be related to HPV?

If you could reply back to me I'd be most appreciative.

By my own sight. I am not worried about it. If you do a check, you will see images of them. Some are horn-like. Some are stalks. Some are bumps. And in my case I have stalks. The weird thing is that your mouth changes from day to day, even hour to hour. Sometimes they don't appear stalky.

In one link I saw fimbriated folds are a normal part of tongue development.

One day last week I was reading about cold sores. The next day I got a pimple-like red sore inside my mouth below my lower lip. The lower lip was very dry. I was very concerned. The sore completely disappeared well within a day. My thinking is that I had some reaction with my mouthwash, something I ate, or something I drank.

Another panic I had recently is that I felt I had a swollen tongue. It hurt in some places. I did some google research and found the culprit: whitening strips toothpaste. I switched to my regular toothpaste and my tongue went to normal.

At the moment I am fighting a sore throat, but I had lack of sleep a couple of days and it overwhelmed my immune system.

Hi. Thanks for the info I'm sure we'll both check it out. How were you diagnosed? Biopsy or just by sight?

One possibility is a fimbriated fold. That is harmless and not uncommon. Google it. I have been having my own worries about whether I have oral STDs, and found a few weeks ago that I have two fimbriated folds under my tongue - flesh-colored skin tags. Not sure when or how fast they appeared.

Hi. I can't believe it. Just today I have noticed a growth under my tongue, exactly the same as the long fleshy one at the entrance to my vagina. To be honest I can't even find the energy to fight the doctors about my mouth when they don't even believe my vagina symptoms. I am frightened though. I have read that if oral and throat warts are left untreated it can cause blockages as they multiply and also cancer. And then other things I read say it is so rare that it can't be that or if it is it'll clear itself over time. I don't know what to believe. I've had swollen throat and difficulty swallowing and breathing with a feeling of bits of broken nuts stuck in my throat when swallowing. And a heavy pressure on my chest like there's a weight on it. All this at the same time as genital symptoms started. It comes and goes though so not sure. Possibly herpes possibly warts? If I ever get answers for genital region then I will follow up by saying I have all these oral symptoms but to battle with both and get nowhere is too exhausting. Stupid but it is a comfort to know somebody else out there is going through the same thing. Although I obviously wouldn't wish this upon you. It sounds like you'll have more luck getting a biopsy than I will so if you do will you please post on here to let me know the outcome?

Puzzle,

I haven't been back to the doctor since my last post, so unfortunately I don't have an update for you. What I can tell you is that I came across a site where a person was diagnosed with an oral wart after biopsy, and the pic of his oral wart looked identical to what my gyn is calling a skin tag inside my vagina.  It also looked similar to what I've been seeing beneath my tongue.

I'm hoping some other members of the forum would shed some light on this particular situation.  For a site that boasts millions of users, I must say I'm somewhat disappointed by the general lack of response (yourself excluded of course).

I have to wonder if my situation is truly so unique that no one else can offer advice.  I've seen so many other posts where the question being posed has been asked and answered several times, but members continue to reply.  Yet, this question, from my search on this site, doesn't seem to ever elicit a clear answer.

I'm planning on asking my gyn to biopsy the "skin tag" to confirm her diagnosis.  If I'm given the all clear there, which I desperately hope I am, I'll trust the diagnosis and go to an ENT regarding the bumps beneath my tongue.

Best of luck to you, puzzle,  And I hope this thread eventually receives greater attention from the forum.

Just wondering if you've managed to find out any possible answers? I've been constantly researching and can't find anything. Apparently there is nothing else that produces growths of what looks like normal tissue! I am frightened to think this is a horrible infection that isn't being diagnosed and I'll pass it on. Somebody reading this must have an idea. I'm still convinced it is warts and just doesn't look typical classic warts.

Hi. I am going through the exact same thing. Feel free to read my posts. I kept getting told it is normal skin and I must have just not notice them before. Not true. I saw them grow over a period of weeks. But as they don't think it's abnormal tissue nobody will biopsy. I am scared and exhausted. Please keep in touch and if either of us find an answer can we let the other know? I'm also battling to get herpes diagnosed as I don't have the classic blisters but have every other symptom. This is a nightmare.
