smear due to high-risk HPV (I'm guessing it is HPV-16). It is my understanding that it is now believed that HPV-16 is more likely than alcohol or smoking
to cause oropharyngeal cancer (albeit still rare it is on the rise). I would appreciate if someone could answer some questions and maybe point me to the latest research articles.
1. Does anyone or are there any articles that try to answer why HPV related oropharyngeal cancer is 2x more prevalent in men than women?
2. Do we know if the incidence of oropharyngeal cancer is highest in the first few years following HPV infection? I believe cervical dysplasia in women more often occurs following initial infection with high-risk HPV.
3. Are there new tools that dentists are using to detect early warning signs of oropharyngeal cancer? Is use of Velscope common
