HPV-throat cancer & cervical cancer

I found out 6 months ago during a regular paps that I had genital warts so I went for several treatments and it went away. A couple weeks after initially find out that I had genital warts the doctor called me and told me she found abnormal cells in my cervix so I should make sure and get another pap in 6 months. Two months ago I found a couple of bumps on my tongue and my throat was sore. I went to a walk-in clinic and they told me that I should gargle with Listerine and I should be fine, they took a swap and have not contacted me so I assumed things would be fine. Two months later my tongue is not better, my sore throat has gotten worse where my lymph nodes are swollen and my neck muscles are sore. I am not getting proper rest because my neck muscles are sore, I feel like I have an earache and I have frequent headaches. For two weeks now I have been having cramps, I figured because I was getting my period. I finished my period a couple days ago and I am still feeling a bit discomfort by my lower stomach area. After my period ended, I took a mirror and took a look myself to make sure there isn't anything there. But now that I look I have one genital wart on my labia and a couple of bumps around my vagina.

I am so scared now. I am 21 and I found out a month ago that my boyfriend has been cheating on me from throughout our whole relationship of a year with multiple partners. I did have unprotected sex sometimes and oral sex. I was wondering how long can throat cancer take to develop? What sort of treatments can be provided to get rid of the warts on my tongue and the situation in my throat? How long does it take for cervical cancer to develop? What kind of treatment can be provided to prevent it from getting to that stage-because they already found abnormal cells in my cervix so now that I see genital warts I am assuming that I am close to that stage of developing cervical cancer. Would I have to go through surgery? I don't want my family knowing, but would I have to let them know in order for them to take care of me if I do have to have surgery?

Hi Autumn22,
Sorry you have these problems. Let me put your mind at rest here.
1. Genital warts are caused by low risk HPV and do not become cervical cancer.
2. Abnormal cells on the cervix are not usually cervical cancer and is more often caused by other things. It takes years to get cervical cancer and you don't normally develop it until your 30's or 40's. But, do continue the follow up to make sure things are ok.
3. Your sore  throat and swollen lymph nodes are probably a virus like mono; may not be HPV anyway. You may need to get your throat checked again since it hasn't gotten better, do you have a fever? It could be a lot of things and may not be related to oral sex. Best to get it checked out.
4. Throat or cervical cancer takes years to develop.
I wouldn't worry about surgery at this point. The oral problem is probably something else so I would go to a doctor for that to see why your lymph nodes are swollen.
hope this helps.

It could be a cyst. Try a hot bath a few times and see if that helps.

I'm so glad everything turned out normal. I didn't think the tougue sores were anything to do with an STD. It is good to hear that I am helping people in some way. It makes it worth while when people say that especially. People have helped me too on these sites and I have freaked as well. So, glad that they have this.

Hello! I am so happy :) I got the test results back and I am healthy. The doctors told me the issue with my tongue should go away soon but I have to stop using listerine because it could be irritating it. For sure I do not have an std in my mouth. As for my cervix the abnormal cells have cleared away! So now the only thing I must do is come back every 6 months instead of the regular every year pap test but I am completely content about that
I am completely thankful for the outcome of this situation but also that you reached out to me when I was freaking out. Thank you for putting my mind at ease at that time. You do a good thing for people by responding and helping on medhelp. I'll stop being overly grateful but just thought I'd let you know I do appreciate it.

Hi Autumn22,
Glad you went to the doc. Hopefully, you will feel better about your situation once you get some of these tests back. I wouldn't worry about HPV in the throat because it even if it is positive for HPV and there is no tumor you can't treat for it and it should clear on its own. They don't normally treat for throat HPV only once you have a tumor. Yes I would like to know how your tests come out. It is good though that you are following up with the HIV, CT/ GC. I'm glad the lump in your throat was just swollen glands. If you had mono you would have swollen lymph nodes. You could add hepatitis screen and HSV2 if you wanted to check everything out. But you would have to call the doctor to have them add those tests.

So I went to the doctor's and she says that my throat seems like I might have some sinus issues, my glands are swollen not my lymph nodes..she told me not to worry. She noticed white fluid on the back of my throat. She says she will get me to do some blood work and take a urine sample if I am so worried about the hpv and to check for chlamydia+hiv (my choice). Better to be safe than sorry since my ex did cheat on me with several women. She is also going to check if I have mono. As for the 2 bumps on my tongue she says that happens if I burnt it or ate something that was harsh.. I asked if that would last for two months she said if I was really worried the next time it is more visible I should go to the sexual health clinic. She says it was not that visible, (I'm not exaggerating about the visibility of the bumps, even my friend said it is noticeable and I should get it checked out).but the doctor suggested it was nothing to worry about. I will definitely go to the sexual health clinic next week though. On monday I will go get the lab work done as well. I also have a paps test scheduled for tuesday to check on the cervical situation.
I'll keep you updated on the results of the lab work, if you'd like. Hope all is well with you :)

I think for the lump in your throat you should get it checked out by your doctor even if you have to pay. I don't know what it is but if there is a lump it has to be looked at. It may be swollen lymph nodes due to some sort of infection on the tongue. You can lots of other infections. I would be honest with the doctor and tell them what you have been involved in with this guy that cheated and your concerns. FYI, I went through the same college schedule but did 3 classes a quarter and worked 32 hours. It is tough but then in the end you will be glad. But, your health comes first. I still don't think it is HPV necessarily but any lumps needs to be checked ok?

Thank you so much for your response. You definitely put my mind at ease in terms of having more time to deal with this. I attend University pt and work ft and wanted to quit and find a different job because the job was effecting my studies but was nervous that I could not at this point because I would need the insurance for a surgery soon. This whole situation has had me completely emotionally drained and I really appreciate your response!
I have one more question..

I looked up pictures on google which I know can make a person even more paranoid but the pictures reflect the type of bumps I have on my tongue. I have  2 prominent bumps on the side of my tongue. Even when I gargle with listerine it burns my tongue and certain parts of my mouth. When I feel around my neck I can feel a lump inside my throat it feels like a little ball. I felt it a month ago and I noticed it becoming bigger. I understand now that it takes a few years to develop the cancerous part of hpv but do you think I could have hpv on my tongue and in my throat?
