HPV transmission question

HPV transmission question

Hi there,
About 6 months ago my doctor said she thought I had a few tiny genital warts. I have been back to the doctor a few more times to be checked and there have not been any more outbreaks. I am in a monogamous relationship now and I told my boyfriend that I may have HPV, which he is fine with. Since he is the only person I have had intercourse with, I'm not worried about transmitting it to anyone else. I realize that he probably has HPV now since we don't use protection (besides the pill). My question is, if I gave him oral sex and got HPV in my mouth, is it possible that I gave him mouth HPV through kissing him? How common is HPV in the mouth? And how common would this way of transmission be? I don't let him give me oral sex because I'm nervous about that.

Hi,

First of all congratulations for not having anymore outbreaks.

The question of Oral sex and HPV research is still kind of bleak. I have heard that once the lesions are clear for a certain amount of time ( 6months or more) you're not really at risk of transmitting the virus anymore. However, everyone is different and anything could happen.

I have also heard that the risk of Oral HPV is rare, and that most healthy people are able to clear any HPV orally related. I think its best that you consult a doctor about that, or try and browse the expert forums to get a more definite answer.

Here is a question answered by Dr. Handsfield relative to oral HPV:

Q12. Im a male with HPV, my girlfriend is afraid that she will get HPV if she gives me oral sex, is this possible?
A. Oral warts are rare, despite the frequency of oral exposure to HPV and undoubtedly to warts themselves. The biological reasons aren't known, but whatever the explanation, the various HPV types take hold on certain parts of the body but not others. The situation is different in people with immune deficiencies. Newborn babies (whose immune systems are still in development) sometimes get warts of the mouth and throat from exposure to mom's genital HPV during deliver; and oral and facial warts sometimes are seen in people with AIDS. But most sexually active persons have nothing to worry about in regard to oral sex and HPV or warts.

I hope this helps, even if at all. Im not medically licensed to give you anything concrete and you should always follow-up with your physician for the best advice. There much info out there and not everyone agrees with one answer. Stay healthy and take care of yourself, you should be good God willing =)

Hi there. Thanks so much for your response, I appreciate it. If I may ask one other question. If I did hypothetically have oral warts, is it likely that kissing would be enough to transmit them?

i think something was mentioned about "deep french kissing" is a possible way to transmit them but i doubt a casual kiss would.

I honestly don't know too much about the oral aspect of warts , have you tried the experts forum? I highly suggest you ask one of the doctors about it if you want to know more about oral hpv.

The thing is that there isn't enough concrete evidence of Oral warts out there and almost everyone has a different opinion about it.
