HPV...Oral...Anal?

by HannahMonica, Oct 28, 2009 01:25AM
I feel kind of embarrased to ask this, but I have wondered since my diagnosis of HPV in 2006 if, since I do have unprotected sex with my boyfriend (we are in a monogamous relationship), if we have oral or anal sex, can the HPV be transmitted to the mouth or anus? And, if so, are there tests to see if you have HPV in these areas? Just a little background info: I have high-risk HPV that causes cellular changes on my cervix and vagina...no warts. Also, I have been given the Gardasil shot post-diagnosis.

you can have/get hpv orally or anally..there is a test that can be done for both (anal pap and a dentist can test you orally for the virus.

ps..no embarassing questions..we're all adults  :)

What are the symptoms of oral and anal hpv...other than warts, obviously...as I have a type of HPV that does cause wart formation, just cell changes...?

high risk hpv doesn't cause warts... it can cause cell changes but not guaranteed. If you have it anally/orally you'll never know until/if there is cell changes which will eventually lead to noticeable  symptoms(ie..rectal pain/bleeding)..BUT getting oral/anal/penile cancer is RARE! you can get the gardisil shot..it can protect you from the strains that you don't have..won't cure the one that you have already (protects against the two most common low risk 6/11 and the two most high risk 16/18). The virus canbe transmitted if it's active/shedding..which is why it's so important to keep your immune system strong.
