How did this happen?

Last year I was diagnosed with one of the high risk types of HPV and abnormal cells were found in my cervix. At a subsequent pap smear about 7 months later, things were back to normal (or so I assume since I didn't get further calls from the dr).  My question is, how exactly did I get HPV?

I know it can be transmitted even with the use of condoms but I've also heard there needs to be some sort of lesion touching your skin to give you it. As far as I know, none of my partners had any lesions.  I've never had unprotected vaginal sex, though I have had unprotected anal sex.  Could the latter have given me HPV in my cervix?  If so, does that mean I also have it in my anus?

First you should call your doc back today and find out the results from your last PAP and HPV test.
There are over 100 strains of HPV..the high risk strain doesn't cause warts/lesions (no visible symptoms) so you/and your partner would never know if they had it. during vaginal sex, body parts usually touch before penetration/putting on a condom..and yes you could have the virus anally (you would have to have an anal PAP)
