How??

by Sue3, Dec 19, 2007 08:24PM
Ok.. I will make my question as short as I can.. I am 34 years old (will be 35 in a week!!!)and I had an abnormal pap result.  My Dr. said I had Dysplasia.  I had a coloscopy with biopsy done today.  They biopsied three different areas of my cervix.  I now have to wait... ugh.  I am a wreck and my husband is also.  We have been married for almost 14 years, together for almost 19 years.  (I was 16 when I met him in High School)  I am reading that this is caused from HPV.  If I have been married for this many years, how is that possible???  How long ago could I have gotten this HPV??  I am so worried right now about the result of the biopsy..

Unfortunately HPV is unavoidable - all sexually active people will get it.  (See the Dr.'s forum archives, in particular Dr. Handsfield's posts).  It is sexually transmitted. It doesn't matter when or from who you got it, it can lie dormant for many years only to pop up when the immune system is low.  Many times after a woman has a baby, she will get a bad pap.  Most women get HPV in their teens and 20's so someone that you were with or your husband was with most likely transmitted it without knowing.

What did the pap come back with - LGSIL or HGSIL?

She didn't tell me  if it was Lgsil or Hgsil.. just did the coloscopy, said it "changed color" did the three biopsies and told me not to worry.  Yea right!!!

Also, as far as my immune system being low.. I also had a full blood work up done and was told I was a "specimen of perfect health".
I have had 3 kids, they are now 9,10 and 12.  My husband has had a vasectomy, so we are not having anymore babies.. I wouldn't be against a hysterectomy I suppose, if it was necessary.

Great news about your blood work.  That will actually help you alot.  Biopsies are quite normal when they do a colposopy.  If your dr. said not to worry, then I wouldn't worry.  They see this stuff all the time and know when something looks really bad, and out of fear of being sued, she isn't going to give you false hope.  Also, it takes a long time for an abnormal pap to progress to cancer and in most cases it doesn't.  Only 5% of the cases will lead to cancer so rest easy on that.  Many times, everything will revert to normal but you still need to get checked out and get treatment if something is amiss.

I had LGSIL caused by high risk HPV, had the colposcopy and all, everything was fine and now I have normal paps and even the HPV test is testing negative.  It's just gone dormant which it often does.

Only get the hysterectomy if you really need it.  I've had one (not due to HPV) and there are complications with that too.  Your bladder can drop and it's not fun having to go to the bathroom all the time!

Anyway, just wait for the results and if you need further care (LEEP or cryosurgery) you'll get it and you'll be fine.  In most cases, once that's done, you will be ok from there on out.

I would like to mention that taking a good multi-vitamin and extra folic acid will help keep your immunity strong.

Ok.. thanks!!  I still don't understand the HPV thing.. she didn't tell me anything at all about it.. didn't even mention it.  I was researching dysplasia anf found it.. why didn't she tell me about it?  Does Dyspasia automatically mean you have HPV?

by mayflowers, Dec 19, 2007 09:40PM
Yes, it is usually what causes it so I'm surprised she didn't mention it.

If you have girls, please think about having them get the HPV vaccine.  It protects them against the most common 2 high risk HPV's and 2 low ris HPV viruses.  Good luck.  I hope everything comes back benign.
