Please help! Confused how long hpv can lay dormant?

I have been with my husband for 9 years and he is the only sexual partner that I have ever had.  I have two children and have had several paps in the past few years, however, I don't know if I had ever been tested for hpv, since I had never had abnormal pap tests, would the doctor normally run this exam when I was pregnant? I just today had a colposcopy to biopsy slight abnormal cells, the dr. said had come from hpv.
He said this is a virus i would have come into contact up to the last 3-5 years, basically said my husband had brought this into our life.  I am soooo confused, I have accused him of cheating, etc.. But now, I have read the virus can lay dormant for years.  So my main question is,could I have gotten this from him from previous partners that he had had? Before our marriage- 9 years ago?  Some articles say yes, others say that I would have/ should have fought this virus off in 1-2 years, so I am totally confused.  I understand if we do not have these answers, but why would my doctor say this with such certainty to me, I can only assume it is because of something I am not understanding, could it be because I have been tested for hpv in the past so he knows it is a new thing or could i have had it and it lay dormant? I am so confused,,,,please help!!!

It can the high risk last forever. Since my husband was a diver traveling he hit the strip bars. Finally I got the bad news I had the three worst 16 18 & I believe 46 or 48. How long does it linger? For two years now I’m positive and having to go through hell with rashes and pain. I didn’t get in my sleep!

Now I’m scared as hell he says he don’t have it. But he has every sex porn hornet porn. Just found out after 30 years.  He thinks he can’t have it! So he did order that dna test for men with high risk strains. He’s got them. I hope his test come back so he can be fearful too. Making me feel like I did it isn’t going to fly! Two months after I was dionoised my feet I’m a tiny tall woman but my feet swole up to the point I thought they would pop. This I knew was something but was unsure.

My wife and I began dating in 1989 and we were married in 1990.  I have not had sex with anyone except my wife since we started dating in 1989. I was 33 years old in 1989 - prior to my relationship with her I had been sexually active with other women and her with other men. In 2015 my wife had a pap smear showing an HPV infection. She did not find out about this until she went back for her yearly fiscal a year later. During this time period we were sexually active together.  She had another pap smear showed the HPV was gone. Her doctor told her that this was an STD and that I had to have been unfaithful to her. I know this to be untrue. Is there any medical explanation for the 2014 HPV infection? I know I was not unfaithful and I believe my wife when she says she wasn't either. Can HPV stay dormant in a person this long? Pop up and then go away.

Thank you for your comment "As a doctor from this site state previously, "if HPV is your only reason to think he cheated, it has no basis" ". That has made me stop. I was recently diagnosed with HPV and I'm convinced I got it from my ex-fiancee.. We were together for 3 1/2 years; I suspected him of cheating and when I found a Facebook comment from a girl I didn't know about how it was 'great hanging out with him' while I was at work I was prepared to end it. But a few days later, he proposed to me. We stayed together for almost a year after that. Our relationship ended because of many things, but I moved out, left town, and have since started a new life.
I've had physicals every year except this past year. I skipped it because there was 'no need'. I got one before I left, and got the test results. I was devastated and furious. I called him, asked him if he cheated and he said no. I told him I got HPV and asked him again.. He still denies it; but he's had a bout of lying about simple stupid stuff to make himself look good, so for him to be in denial doesn't surprise me.
Then I saw an article that said it could lay dormant and getting it could mean no cheating was involved but the strand that I have took 8-10 months to show up.. He proposed to me in July last year (when I almost left him) and I found out this year in August. Since there's been stories of his attempts on a few girls, and there's been NO doubt in my mind that he cheated until I read about how not ALWAYS is it from cheating partners.. Now I know. Funny how sometimes such a simple statement can bring some little closure.
I also recieved news about my 3 month repap that shows that I have ascus as well..Now I have to wait 6 more months for another test. I'm freaking out and very on edge due to the high chance of cervical cancer and I'm not sure what to do. So much of me wants to let him know what happened; for a little bit of spite and so he knows that this is SERIOUS. He's already been with one girl that he admitted to me, and now I'm certain she has HPV too..He needs to know how serious this is. I just don't know if it's worth stirring up those ashes.
Again, thank you and any advice is much appreciated.
Blessings To All;
La Gypsy

I am heart broken, and I'm  confused! I need some opinions here!

I have been married for 2 years may 14th will be 3 years. After my second child I had to have my uterus removed at the age of 22, I am 26 now. Last year I began having some cramping like I was going to have a period, well that's not possible.

There have been many questionable events that have occurred through my marriage. I do not believe my husband has been faithful, in March he tried to sleep with my sister, while I was passed out. We had went out to celebrate St.Patricks day. And there were three more events that occurred before the incident with my sister. FYI she shot him down. In July I our marriage almost ended due to a porn addiction and whatever else he was doing. And My husband lies incessantly.

I found out on Tuesday that I have gentile warts caused from HPV. I "had" HPV at the age of 16, 2-3 months later I went back and was told that I no longer had it, and through my pregnancies I was tested, and again I didn't show up with it. My uterus and the majority of my cervix was removed. When I was diagnosed with it at age 16, I did not have the warts.

Here is my problem, after removal of my uterus, could I still have it and it lay dormant for all of these years? I have read that most people show signs 3weeks to six months after being infected. I do not know what to think. My dr told me that this is not from when I was 16. And advised that I get the vaccine , I started the vaccine, now I am stuck with these warts and wondering if I got this from my husband because I can't believe a word he says.

Can someone please please help me?

Two things.... #1) I got the same diagnosis and #2) I teach sex ed (specifically sexually transmitted diseases) so my info is usually current.  The reason why you cannot get the guardasil (spelling? sorry) shot to prevent HPV if you are not a virgin or if your partner was not a virgin before you is because the probability of silent HPV infection is so  high that it is a waste.  My gyno said that in  women in the above description, that have dysplasia of the cervix, 100% will test positive for the virus.  You can never have a wart ever, and still have the virus for years.  Men can carry it too for years, but are less likely to be diagnosed because they don't have the same "cancer" risk, and men are resistant to having their penis "notched" when there are no symptoms.  I was told I could have been infected back in college and I'm 50 now.  This is supported by current info on HPV. *NOTE* a sudden emergence of warts however, does imply a recent infection.

I responded to your "too many Hoax" comments.  You need to read that as this response from you is exactly why people are leaving the site.  Maybe you are not understanding that when the Dr. says minority...that means that sometimes it can happen.  It means it is a very rare occurence but it can happen.

ur very funny!if u read Drs.Hooks reply to mary he states in a minority of cases HPV can lie dormant...minority.only women can decide if their in the minority..and many of the doctors responses  refer to recent infections.if ur comfortable believing that genital warts are not from sexual transmission then that is ur choice!

As a doctor from this site state previously, "if HPV is your only reason to think he cheated, it has no basis"  There are numerous people on this site who are married for years and then this shows up.  There was no cheating involved.  And, ibizan, they call it "genital" because of it's location.  As in your words .... DUH!!!

this is a confusing issue for many as HPV is a complex virus with many unknowns presently..many doctors differ in their opinions on the dormancy thing and many state like ur doctor does and I agree with ur doctor as did mine and my gyno that it was a recent infection as was mine after 10 years of celibacy and getting in2 a relationship.there are a few here that get genital warts and believe they are not sexually transmitted...which is foolish to me...why do they call them genital?the most important thing is u getting treatment and a difficult issue indeed on believing what ur hub says.
