Cervical dysplasia (sometimes called precancerous cells) is caused by HPV which is considered to a sexually transmitted disease although it can be transmitted through skin to skin (genital) contact. It is extremely common (80% of people will have an active infection by the time they are 50) and can be transitted even with the use of condoms (which are about 70% effective against HPV). It is likely the dysplasia she is currently experiencing is due to a previous exposure from early on when the two of you were first together or from a previous relationship (if there was one). HPV has the ability to lay dormant for years (over 20 even) before ever becoming active - if it ever does. So having dysplasia now does not mean that it is due to a recent infection of an STD - it is likely due to something that she has had for some time.
Higher levels of dysplasia (CIN2, CIN3, CIS, AIS) are caused by high risk HPV, and warts are caused by low risk HPV. It is common to have more than one strain and/or strains from either category. Most often HPV does not have any ill effects for men however it is important to know that in addition to the cervix, the virus does have the ability to cause dysplasia or cancer of the vagina, vulva, anus, penis and oral cavity, although rare it can happen.
