Sex after HPV

by maria1707, Jun 12, 2008 01:34PM
Dear Doctor,

I was recently diagnosed with HPV (type 16). However, my boyfriend tested negative for HPV. I've read on some sites that HPV can not be fully protected even when using a condom. My boyfriend is very supportive of me and still wants to continue a sexual relationship. I do not want to put him in a high-risk position. Are there any other ways to protect against transmission of HPV?

Your boyfriend can't be tested for the high risk hpv's such as HPV 16.  The only way to tell if a man has HPV is if he has the wart variety, which is low risk.   You are correct that condoms are not always complete protection against the transmission of HPV.  If you have  been having sex, then he already has the same type of HPV.  If you haven't been having sex, then wait until your test negative again to have sex.
