hpv neg when dormant?

Quick question : If a woman tests neg for hpv several times and then positive (no new partner, encounter, etc.) does it mean the virus was dormant when testing neg? The guidelines are not to test more often than every 3 years if both pap and hvp are neg. So, if a woman tests neg,. should she assume that it might be just dormant??? It makes absolutely no sense then to wait and test every 3 years ...

Still have not heard back from my results, but my gyno's office is slow in getting results back anyway. I figure no news is good news...

I had a pap in 2010 & in 2011 since I had tested negative all these years she did not see a reason for me to have another one & said I would get one done in 2012. This year I had to go see a uro-gyno for a bladder sling issue & he said since he was "there", he may as well do a pap test. It of course comes out positive, so he says the strain found prompted the lab to automatically do a HPV test & that is when it came positive for High Risk so had the coloscopy done (nomral).

When I went back for my yearly to my regualr gyno I told her about it and she says why didn't we do one in 2011? I said because "you said I did not need one", so of course she was mad that she did not do one on me, but she was going by guide lines. So i guess I could have had it longer than thought, sometime in 2010. My uro-gyno said the pap results tells the lab if an HPV test is warranted. Something about DNA, not sure..

oh, the reason i posted the comment is that guidelines are wrong...when a woman is told that her tests are normal, she can wait 3 years (some even recommend waiting 5 years)...what is the virus becomes active a month after the testing...and the woman waits for her next checkup for up to 3-5 years????

I have had pap tests for the last 22 yrs & everytime normal, EVEN had HPV test done and negative.

This past year I tested positive for High Risk HPV after an abnormal pap smear. Of course I freaked out. I have been married for 24yrs and NO never cheated, and my husband claims he has never either (he has not EVER given me reason to question), so according to my gyno I could have had this prior to meeting my husband, she says it can lay dormant for decades.

I just had my second pap done 6 months after the first one, no results yet. I did have to have a colopscopy came back normal...
