I dont wanna seemlike im being a baby, actually the truth is.. Im not even sure if anyone on here can even see what Im posting, I just happened to run into this site, saw I could create a profile so I did.. I just thought that someone would be able to help me out.. I am completley lost.. I am due for surgery in about 3 wks and I am totally freaking out.. ive always been a very healthy person.. I have 3 kids, my youngest is 10 and Ive always felt so young at heart that I could put myself at her level and be a kid with her.. she loves that about me and now I feel like all that is about to be taken from me by having this hysterectomy done and hearing all these crazy stories and experiences about what woman go threw after having it done.. I have never been a health freakk. I eat what ever I want, I dont exercise.. I dont take vitamines.. never thought I had too, I always did what I wanted and now Im hearing all this medication stuff and words Ive never even heard before.. I am terrified :'(
I don't know if the question was intended for me or not, but my doctor wants to do the surgery due to abnormal pap smears that started 9 months ago, the irregular cycles I have had for the last 10yrs, & the ovarian cysts. She took my left ovary out due to a 4.5cm complex cyst.
My PMS symptoms have gotten a lot worse as I got older (I am 42). I do take PONSTEL & Ibuprofen 800 when on my cycle.
For me my cycles will NEVER be consistent due to my thyroid issue. I am either medically hypo (which makes my cycles heavy & painful for at leastt 10days ) or medically hyper (2 cycles within 30 days that last 3-5 days).
I can't take BC due to being a smoker. Yes I know I should quit....

I had a total hysterectomy in July and after suffering from pain and discomfort since age 19, I've never felt better. My moods are here and there at times, but still trying to figure out the hormone thing. I also have NO menopausal symptoms. I did very well on progesterone, but when he switched me over to estrogen, I didn't like what it was doing to me so I've stopped it for awhile to see what happens. My mom was 33 when she had hers and never took hormones. neither did my mother in law nor both sister in laws. No major problems with them either. Good luck. I was always a bit scared and put it off too long. More and more women feel so much better following surgery.

Can you say why your Dr is recommending the surgery? Have you had a second opinion, have you tried all other treatments?
I had a complete hysterectomy at 25 because of endometriosis. It was the best thing I could have done. I had a great Dr and he even started me on hormones while I was still in the hospital. I did have abdominal surgery and the scar is not bad at all. I could wear a bikini, if I was'nt embarrassed to. Ha ha! I'm 51 now, not 25.
Talk to your Dr before you have the surgery about hormones and your options. This is only my opinion but I would not take Premarin. I've heard good things about bio identical hormones. Something you may want to talk to your Dr about.

I am pretty confident in my choice to go ahead and get it done. I have only my right ovary, but when that was tested they said it is basically dead so it is not producing anything for me.

Oh my goodness.. I dont know what to say.. I do know one person, actually shes a very good friend of mine who went threw the surgery and has no sex drive either.. I have pre op tomorrow and boy do I have lots to talk about with my doctor..
All I can say is each woman is different, but like my current OBGYN states: that when the uterus and overies are removed, there is a 90% chance that a woman's sex drive will decline but if it's a partial and the overies are left in, then she can still have a sex drive since the overies are producing estrogen, Women need to educate themselves regarding this surgery because, those are not only reproductive organs but our female organs that also produce our hormones...and when your hormones are competley out of wack....that is what causes the decrease in our sex drives....
I have heard stories that a womans sex drive gets better and I guess i depends on her situation, but not with my experience...All I'm saying is let this be he very last option before making a life changing decision.

Strange, my female co-workers all told me yes they had a decline in sex drive, but once they were put on hormone pills their sex life came back.
Now, here in the office, we are pretty open to our discussions...
Two said they wanted it more now then before...They all range in age from 35-50.
Everyone of them said it was the best day of their lives when they had it done.

I just wanted to post something to you in regards this surgery...and this is not to scare you in anyway...but I had a total hysterectomy back in 2006 and it was the worse decision I made ever. I was 29 years old and found out that I had Adenomyosis and my doc told me the only way to stop the intense pain was to have this procedure....I trusted my doc since he delivered all 3 of my children...He told me that after the surgery I'm going to put you on hormones and your going to be just fine....Well it's 2012 and I'm not...I lost my complete sex drive....my husband an I had a wonderful healthy sex life before....and that ended abrubtly after surgery....It actually ended my marriage of 13 years because I was not the same anymore....I couldn't cuddle with him because of the intense hot flashes....I was never in the mood for sex period and when we did I have lost all sensation in my breast..which was one of the sensative areas for me....I have cried for almost six years and have tried everything to get the old me back....but nothing works...So now I am with a man that loves me for me and is so attracted to me and I feel the same..but when we have intercourse...my body does not produce lubrication at all and I'm always using Lube gel...but even with that I don't get pleasure because the uterus is gone and that is where you get your orgasims from...I like to tell my story when I get a chance because....This is real and every woman is different....and before you make a life changing decision like this get another oppinion...that is where I made my mistake by trusting a Doc that knew me so well...but that is not always the case....I'm the same person on the outside and still crack my jokes and laugh with friends and family but when it comes to that intimate part of me...all I can say is it died when...my sexual organs were taken from me...Let a doc try telling a male that he is going to have to remove part or all of his sexual organs...A guy will run like a bat out of hell of that office...and women need to take head and do the same..I Learned the Hard Way.Sorry so long but wanted to share my experience

Thank you sugarb... Im not even sure why Im freaking out.. I guess after reading all this stuff on this website might of made it even worse.. I was looking for some kind of support group and Im not sure it was such a good idea.. Those were great questions, Im telling you, I would'nt of ask half of the questions yoiu mention because I am in total shock.. Like I said before.. I never had anything seriously wrong with my health.. of course I new what a hystorectomy was but Inever really new the severity of it.. never thought I needed to know.. Im not so much worried about the surgery.. mabey I should be, not sure Im mostly worried about the after math.. my changes.. having young children and them seeing me change right before there eyes..
Why are you freaking out? Is it about the actual hysterectomy and loosing the ability to have more children or just anxiety about what may happen? Have you researched the doctor whom is to do your surgery and the hospital where it will be done? How many surgies has the doctor performed? will it be laproscopic? Will you receive an antibiotic? What is the rate of infection after surgical procedures done in the facility where your surgery will take place?
Ask lots of question.....If you have already had your preop appointment call the office up and tell them you still have a lot of questions. Research the doctor and facility on the internet with reliable sources, for example dont rely on on people with no credentials, .com websites, or people who makes too good to be true claims (usually they are).
A good surgery will include identifying the patient correctly with name, date of birth, the surgical procedure being done, doctor doing it, they will mark the surgical site with a marker and sometimes even a bracelet. You should take a shower with antimicrobial soap the night before and morning of and scrub all areas of the skin especially where the surgical site, dont forget to wash the hair and no conditioner.
A good health care provider and center will be happy to answer your questions and will never not have time for you. Remember to write down exactly what you want to know and take it with you so you dont forget anything..........
