Help after Hysterectomy

I am 40 years old and 3 weeks ago I had a hysterectomy where they took everything but my right ovary. It turns out I had Adnomyosis and was full of fibroids even tho nothing showed up on previous testing. I am glad I made the right decision to have the surgery but now my mood swings are off the charts and I feel like I'm going crazy and losing control. I also suffer from panic disorder that I had under control without meds up untill now. My doctor told me that with one ovary I wouldn't have the instant menopause and when I ask her about why I'm having hot flashes and mood swings she doesn't really have an answer other than maybe I need counciling. Is any of this normal or am I really (as 2 doctors have basically said) crazy?

Hi, I hope to be of some help, We are not Drs here and I would have just one or two things to say that perhaps your Dr, did not clarify. As you likely know, you ovulate from alternating ovaries every other month,. in theory the one ovary should be doing the work of two, does not mean it is..Infact it could also be decreasing amount of hormones due to trauma of surgery.

Ahysterectomy is difficult at best to recovery from physically. Its very hard mentally also. The combination of panic dissorder and a recent hysterectomy, I would be suprised if you where not having increased anxiety.. one could perhaps say the "mood swings" are due to nerves/stress..however the hot flashes are not.

Counseling is never a bad idea for most of us, however I would think perhaps you need a few weeks to recover before making that determination..It takes 6 weeks min. for a womans body to recover...there is a lot of physical work your body is going through right now,,imagine the void where your uterus used to be , things / fat/muscle are shifting to fill the void. Your tired, bloated, in pain...who  would not be stressed.?

Id suggest two things, see a menopausal specialist who deals with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, these are often nurse practioners. Also see your psychiatrist,,your body chemistry has changed..may be time for med change or dosage change.

its really the most common symptoms post op to have hot flashes, night sweats (I had those bad!!) and mood changes....Most people have mood changes after ANY surgery..give your self time to relax, be a couch potatoe.
If you feel very anxious, have severe panic attacks, have thoughts of harming self or others please go to er immediatley there is a rare condition like post partum depression, that women can have post hysterectomy. It is as I said rare but becareful.

If I can help with anything or you wish to talk in private please send me a pm

Cherie
