Hysterectomy after natural menopause

by behnke3, Dec 28, 2008 07:11PM
Hello, I am 53 years old and my physican has advised that I have a hysterectomy for a fibroid and a ovarian cyst.  I was wondering if anyone else has had a hysterectomy after they went though menopause.  I am concerned about losing my ovary and my bone health.   I wasn't sure if I would go though any emotional things (hormonal things) or I would feel the same as I do now.

theres 2 schools of thought on preserving the ovary post menopausal...one is your right it will help maintain bone health...however this ability declines with age..the flip side is if you get your ovary removed you will never have to worry about ovarian cancer,,which is more difficult to detect after a hysterectomy..

A hysterectomy is an emtional surgery..you may feel blue but it shouldnt be because of hormones...as your already done with menopause..there is a once monthy pill that can be taken for bone desity health and theres the possibility of many kinds of estrogen replacement if you find you need it..Best wishes...its a tough surgery but youll be fine..one suggestion is if you can get the Davinci Robotic Assisted hysterectomy the recovery is much shorter and easier..
