PID after hysterectomy

In July last year I had a vaginal hysterectomy and anterior and posterior prolapse repair. Since then I have suffered urianry incontinence and 8 water infections. I am due to have TVT surgery next week but 2 wks ago I suffered severe abdominal and low back pain along with vomitting and fever. I was admitted to hospital and tested for kidney infections, diverticulitis with ultrasound scans and x-rays and then after a CT scan told I had infected ovaries and tubes.Treated with IV antibiotics and fluids. From what I've read about this it suggests that it is caused by STD's but I have only ever had one partner in 27 years and would trust him 100% to be faithful so how can this have happened? Could infection have been introduced at the time of hysterectomy? Doc did not test me for STD or advise whether it is safe to continue to have sex wiht my husband so we are not doing anything at all just to be sure.Have been told I will be seen in outpatient dept. and have vaginal ultrasound scan in about a month's time but is this likely to recurr and is it safe to go ahead with TVT surgery?

Been to see my GP today and she reckons the infection in my ovaries has been caused by previous pelvic surgery and that adhesions are causing some of the pain. She checked reports from hospital and there are no signs of STDs causing the infection so although I trust my husband it still put my mind at ease. Forgot to ask about sex but to be honest I don't really feel up to it anyhow just yet. My poor husband has had a really rough deal for about a year now!

sandie...my neighbor had a similar situation she ended up having HPV her husband and herself never cheated on each other her doctor told her some viruses (like HPV) can lie dormat for year so I think it may be possibel,,it wouldnt hurt to get checked simple blood test , just to rule it outPID occurs when bacteria move upward from a woman's vagina or cervix. Many different bacteria can cause PID, but many cases are associated with gonorrhea and chlamydia, two very common bacterial STDs. It is my understanding that these two sexually transmitted diseases commonly cause PID  but is not the only cause...there have been young teen virgins with PID it can be from some other types of bacteria...I hope you get into doctor soon also,,,all the best Cherie

Thanks for replying. I know I have NEVER been with anyone else and trust my husband 100% so unless any infection has been lying dormant for about 30 years, which is when I know my husband did have another partner before me, then the only way I could have become infected is during surgery. None of the doctors I saw actually said what caused it but did mention PID and that the infection had to come from outside the body initially. I researched it on the internet and all the info suggests that PID is caused through STDs so this upset me as I know it's impossible in my case. Hopefully I can get an appointment with my own GP this week to discuss the matter and find out for sure.

Hi sandiejo,,and Welcome to MH...I think in summarising your post you have two questions.

1. Is it ok for you to have relations with husband, I can advise you to call your doctor and ask him..he should have given you advise on this, He asked you no questions about possible infidelity?

actually you have three questions.
2. could the ovarian infection have been introduced at time of hysterectomy? yes it is sure possible,,no way I know of to find out,,,what is important is you were diagnosed and treated.
3, about you tvt...You really need to be 100% upfront and honest with your surgeon disclose everything...Im so sorry your going through so much,,but if you have even a hint of illness it is unadvisable to have any surgical procedure..I would think it would be proper in your case for your doc to order a cbc one day prior to surgery...that will tell if your body is ready for it.....Good Luck and please do phone your doctor about the first question,,,,Cherie
