Post Hysterectomy Question?

Could you please tell me what they do with the top of the vagina opening after a complete hysterectomy? The part
that has been connected to the cervix? I have heard of a vaginal cuff, is this what procedure is done, and if so, how is
it done? Thank you.

Hi, I'm about to have a total vaginal hysterectomy, possibly also having to lose the ovaries because of large fibroids and perhaps endometriosis ( been on Zoladez for 4 months to shrink the fibroids which has given me awful menopausal symptoms overnight...)

njw753: you say you use bio-identical oestrogen and testosterone - are these herbal and available over the counter?  I don't think I'll be able to take prescription HRT because of a history of migraines and high blood pressure.

Also, I've a question about losing the cervix - does anyone know if it's more likely that the vagina will prolapse if you don't have a cervix?

Many thank

Hello, I am a 43 year old who is probably going to have a hysterectomy soon, I am waiting for the referral for the doctor affiliated with the hospital I will have the surgery at. I have fibroid tumors in my uterus and a mass on the left outer uterus, They are concerned because my CA125 levels are elevated to 46. I hope if I have to get this done that I will not have the hot flashes and night sweats anymore and hopefully too I will not lose my sex drive. My mother had a hysterectomy too in her 40's because of thyroid problems. She wore the patch till she passed away in 2006. She still had hot flashes but it helped some. What are the pellets like and do they hurt?

I don't even know where to begin...I had a total hysterectomy 21 years ago.  And yes, without some kind of hormones, our vaginas will basically shrivel up and atrophy.

Estrogen is responsible for keeping our vaginal tissues healthy and strong.  But we need testosterone for our sexual beings.  Testosterone is responsible for getting back or not losing our sexual desire, give us the ability to lubricate and orgasm.

I use bioidentical hormones of estrogen and testosterone.  You do NOT have to take pills, there are other options.  These come in patches, gels, creams, troches and pellets.

Some women swear by creams and patches.  I sweare by the pellets.  These are inserted under the skin of my hip by my gyn about 3-4 times per year.

Every single symptom related to menopause is gone:  hot flushes, night sweats, moodiness, sleeplessness, my sex drive is incredible.  And I have no problem with lubrication.

I get so frustrated when doctors or nurses make a blanket statement like you will need lubrication.  We MIGHT need it sometimes....but we are capable of producing our own if we have balanced hormones.  And we can have balanced hormones even without our ovaries.

just re read your post- scratch what I said about ovaries obviously you are getting them removed, this will most likely lead to need for lube, just like Sharon said. I am curious about your age, I am 46, so I am already in middle of menopause, If you are younger- this will be more of a shock to your body, if you are older then, you may be into menopause anyways. cherie

I had this done last year. sharon is right they just remove cervix ( interestingly- through the vaginal opening) then stitch it up. I still have sexual relations and most of the time do not need lube, although sometimes I do. I think this has more to do with my hypo thyrodism (basically dries up your hair, skin etc.) than with hysterectomy. If you keep your ovaries your hormones remain un changed. good luck. Cherie

i had my nurse explain this to me .. its a row of stitches where the cervix (opening into ur womb) used to be ... she further explained that relations with my husband will remain unchanged with the exception of needing lubrication

If the cervix is taken out, then they sew it up. Thats what they did to me, I had everything out, and they just sew it up, and it heals.I hope that is what you are asking. Karen
