poyp and hysterectomy?

Hello: I have a history of problems-cysts; tumors on the ovaries removed years ago; infertility; miscarriages and finally had two sons via c/s.  I went in for an overdue pap, etc. and a very large polyp was found in my uterus. The dr. said, "good size; No, VERY large". He said it had thickened the lining of the uterus alot and had a very rich blood supply going. I have had very, very heavy periods-so heavy It is hard to go out during the first days of my period.

He is going to do a biopsy in a week and a half (after my period goes away) and then decide what to do. If there is hyperplasia (sp?), he will recommend a hysterectomy due to its size, etc. If not, he can't remove it-a specialist will have to. He says it is so big that if he tries I could bleed out. But, even with the specialist, they may decide it isn't worth it to save the uterus, since I am done having kids.

Has anyone had large polyps? Was the outcome hysterectomy? I appreciate ANY responses....Thank you!

I understand your concerns, I have been delaying my own prognosis for over a year now, I do have heavy periods but not as heavy as the ones i am reading here, i do change pads every 2 hours for 1-2 days only. still have lead me to take iron suplements after the period for 10 days daily then every other day, i do eat lots of dark green leaf salads with citics and carrot juice, i came to understand that the medical doctors will lay out the scenarios for you to choose, it is really up to you to decide which works best for you, in my case, to wait was the answer. I think if you do not feel comfortable with the choices keep looking around, there is a bunch of things to try.
Do not dispair! it is a bummer but it is for your own good to keep on going. we will be here to go along the way as well.
Good health to you all!.

wow your bleeding way too much ,heavy for first 3 days, to soak one pad in a hour is a concern..your using double protection and still not enough..

smart Dr. many want to jump to hyster cause it fattens their pocket book..you got a good one..it makes complete sense to check for those cells...preventive medicine can be a very good thing,,better safe than sorry.

let me know how things are going !

Hello: Periods have gone from 5 days to 10 days or longer. I also have spotting in between. Periods are so heavy, that I go through a super, super tampon AND pad in 40 minutes or less for the first 3 days.  I agree-I don't want a hysterectomy. He said he would only recommend it, if the lining had hyperplasia cells. He seemed concerned it did-looking at the lining, etc. on u/s.  I have had one laparotomy for the tumors; one laparoscopy for severe adhesions and then the 2 c/s. I definitely don't want another large surgery, it I don't need it.

I appreciate your input!

Are your periods regular, or irregular...that helps with decision..if regular just polyp can be removed...its almost always a rather simple procedure... Uterine polyps are almost never cancerous (something like 1 in 10,000 are cancerous).  But you should get it out before it grows any bigger, and it will definatley grow..thus increasing odds of hysterectomy. Drs must tell you worst case senerio...for example when I had a d/c they told me my bladder may be lacerated...happens almost never.

I have heard of grapefruit size polyps..I can understand your concerns. I would be worried too, I am glad you came here for advice.

If I was you I would go for the removal vs hysterectomy..I had one of those,  I am very much fine now..but it is a very very hard recovery..6 weeks plus,,lots of restrictions. heavy pain meds..and a lot of women have problems with surgical induced menopause,,this only happens if they take ovaries.
thats a big contraversy too...to have ovaries removed means no fear of ovarian cancer,,and with no uterus or cervix its rare to find ovarian cancer in early stages.
other side..the menopause..a natural menopause is hard enough,,one that happens over night is easy for about 25%  difficult for about 50% most of whom seek HRT..and 25% say it about ruined their lives..I believe all can be halped with bio-identical hormones..it may take 5 or 6 trys to get the right combo..many give up too soon.

hope this helped a bit...any more questions we are here for you
