the last resort

Over the years I have had several "issues" with both ovarian cysts and fibroids. I am 51 yrs old , have autoimmune hypothyroid  and am also a brain tumor survivor.

In GYN terms it is the fibroids which are currently most problematic. At last check before last procedure, they were *numerous and enlarging the uterus to a 5 month pregnancy state.*  Pelvic pain Very heavy bleeding, then light bleeding, on and off for nearly a year.

Since I have had 8 previous abdominal surgeries and a lot of scar tissue from these, my GYN has been reluctant to recommend a hysterectomy and has tried all sorts of other Remedies. I have had hysteroscopy with biopsy and  endometrial ablation, several D & C's for bleeding, and most recently , fibroid embolization. This  in January of this year. It was extremely painful post procedure and I was kept overnight for pain management. I had hopes this would be the answer. 2 weeks later, however, I developed a return of severe pain and high fever. Landed me back in hospital for 3 days  with IV antibiotics for a nasty infection.

Recovered well from that, and had NO bleeding or pain for more than 6 months.  Was exhibiting signs of approaching menopause, finally :)

Last month (Aug 09) there was a sudden occurrence of pain followed by rather a gush of bleeding. This stopped quickly. I saw the GYN; she recommended we "watch and wait".

This past Monday ( Aug 31) pain returned, followed later same day by an actual period. Very heavy at first, now tapering off ( 3 days later) . Saw GYN, she was as disappointed as I was at this return of events.  I am told the hysterectomy would now be my last option. She has let me know it would be a "big deal", even in terms of having gone through brain surgery.  She says she might only be able to remove the uterus, safely.  Meanwhile we are both hoping this might resolve with lighter periods, at least. I am scheduled for an ultrasound early next week, possibly followed by a ct scan to see whats really going on in there. This is all such a disappointment.

If anyone here has had similar experience, perhaps similar history of more than a few abdominal procedures followed by a hysterectomy, or any other words of wisdom, I would be most grateful to hear from you.

Hi and welcome to the forum,,Im gonna be honest w you and try to help you, first off I must say myself included I have notice a direct correlation to the number of midleage women w thyroid issues and gynecologial problems,,Im not really agreeing w your drs "lets watch and see" especially since you are a cancer survior, and a big high 5 to you on that ! Im not trying whatsoever to make you worried I just think it would be prudent and in your best interest to get a diagnosis on this,
If its indeed fibroids again, they are a pain and sometimes difficult to treat, however they are in the upper 90% begnine!  Your my second lady today w almost the same issue,,Id hate to see you go through a hysterectomy when your so very close to menopause, perhaps your dr could put you into a chemically induced menopause to relief thes symptoms until natural menopause comes, the only downside is some of thes meds cause weepiness/sadneess in some women need to watch out for that.
if its fibroids again perhaps your dr can do one mre leep to remove them..
good luck pleas drop me a line when you find out more and please feel free to write me again w any questions..

Hi aireamdh,

I have not had quite the history you have had but I have had bad periods since I was 14, very painful cramps lasting a good deal of the month and a lot of trips to the doctors for it.  I had a c-section, surgery to remove fibroids, d&c and endometrial ablation and all have failed.  Fibroids have returned and my uterus is about the 16 week point now.  I am scheduled for surgery in 3 weeks and quite honestly I cant wait.  I have done all the things I can, short of hormones (cant take due to blood clots that formed in my lungs 5 years ago).  I hope that your doctor can find a way to do a hysterectomy for you so you can end all this pain and help you to enjoy your life again.

I dont really have any words of wisdom but I wanted you to know that I can understand how frustrating it is to go through all of this and end up still having to have a hysterectomy.  Good luck to you.
