Being someone who greatly fears needles, my recent experience with the new meningitis vaccine has only worsened my anxiety.
Almost one month ago, I was at my college doctors appointment to fill out the medical paperwork and to be seen by my doctor. The nurse handed my mom a paper about a new strain of meningitis and its corresponding vaccine. My mom didn't even read the whole article before saying that she wanted me to get it. After having a family member die of it 10+ years ago scared her that much. I wasn't happy and promptly started to freak out. One nurse administered the shot while the other watched.
The needle didn't hurt, it was the serum that did. It burned and my arm hurt right away. I sat for 5 minutes and felt fine, so I got up and walked to receptionist to make an appointment for the second shot while my mom ran to the restroom. I get to the desk and start feeling woozy. All of a sudden I can't see or hear and start passing out. Thanks to a father of two little boys in the room catching me, I only hit the back of my head on the desk. The nurse gave me soda because my blood pressure was down and said that I should've sat for at least 15 minutes.
When I felt better, my frantic mom and I went out to the car. My arm was killing me and I thought it would only be like this for a few days tops. It took 3 weeks and I developed a hard lump at the site of the vaccine. It no longer hurts, but the bump is still there. In 2 days I have to get the 2nd shot and I'm very afraid. Why did my arm hurt for 3 weeks and why do I have a hard bump where the vaccine was given?
