"There isn't any need to get insulting.  We knew, of course, but wanted to give everyone time to get used to it, and maybe like it. "

There is nothing insulting in questioning why we weren't informed that we had a choice all along in this matter. I find it insulting because we are treated like kids. This particular post has been running over a month and I can see the general consensus is not many, if any, agree with it.
However, due to your email of threatening to suspend my account for airing my opinions, I will make this my last post in this forum. I am in the middle of exchanging messages with a number of people who need my experiences to help them. To just cut off an account would leave them with support removed.

It shouldn't, if all you changed was the badges.  Private messages and badges are different options.  If you don't want to show the badges, just select "nobody" for "Sees my badges".

Ed,

There isn't any need to get insulting.  We knew, of course, but wanted to give everyone time to get used to it, and maybe like it.

You didn't like it, that's fine - it's a personal preference.

Ok I'm wondering why after ALL this, the moderators didn't tell us you can disable the stars??????  Why does it take someone to find the option by accident?????

I think someone needs some training.

Thank you so much for the information....Like Mr Green I am "Star Free" now!
What a relief !
Personally I don't need my 5 badges or anything else to tell me how good or bad I am in my responses to worried posters, but simply a heart, common sense, concern and certainly a bit of knowledge to help the best way I can.
Thanks again Jade59, for making my wish come true!....

That's good to know. Yes. I can still see them. But I always see stars anyway. LOL. Is an Irish thing.

Possibly the stars are still visible for You, but I don't see any on your profile and you no longer show up along side the communities as any type of top answerer.  You are star free, Mr Green :)

OK. Has removed me from the top answerers list. Not got rid of the stars from my name. But that is a good start at least. No more private messages from people who imagine I am a miracle worker. Thanks Jade for the info.

That turning off of badges done nothing at all. Stars still visible.

Heck I hate the stars. Always have done. Always will do. They mean nothing to me at all. Hence I opened this thread up again. Useless idea if you want my opinion.

Never knew it was an option. I am off to do away with mine if I can find it.

Displaying your badges IS an option.  It's under "Privacy."  I came across it by accident a few weeks ago.

McGreen,
You're missing the point.  By identifying people with a hierarchical status you give the (patients) the impression that we know what we are talking about.  Case in point, in the Thyroid forum, the girls there insisted that I disregard my Dr.s advise simply because they know better. And to give them recognition with a number of stars is going to kill somebody.  It's already a very dangerous situation having a support forum on the net where anybody can pretend to be anybody, it's far worse to give those anybody's a make shift PHD.

The "reward" for listening to (patients) and answering their questions should not be to give them power to diagnose problems nor should it give them the ability to write prescriptions.  It (the reward) should be something that doesn't suggest power or knowledge, such as maybe a T-Shirt or other physical gift.  If there is to be an electronic gift, it should be in the form of a Thank You note separate from the forum.

In other words, the "stars" system should be eliminated entirely.

Again, no details, just a political speech which I've heard many of because we just had a general election in the UK. You say you are "not sure" it's the majority. So why not find out, let's have a vote? If the vote is a majority against stars etc, will they go? The dangers for this system have been listed, yet are just brushed under the carpet as a very rare thing. If you don't know how many people are against this idea, then I doubt you have any clue as to how many people have been to their Doctors arguing they have it all wrong etc. Whatever case we put forward it seems to be reflected as rare or a minority but the truth is, you don't know.

Hi everyone -

Actually, I'm not sure it's the majority who don't like it.  We do have quite a few people who have let us know they actually like it, but they aren't making posts about it.  That isn't to invalidate your feelings on it, just to let you know that this isn't hated by everyone.

We are always happy to get constructive criticism and feedback from members, and are listening.  Maybe we don't resolve things the way some wish we would, but we are listening, discussing, fine tuning, etc.

"Where's Ed when you need him :-)"

I've already said all I want to say about those silly things. But just to recap, it's obviously a silly idea which nobody is willing to own up to and it seems like they will be defended by the 'experts' who know all about such things and can't be wrong. The majority can see how bad it is but apparently this counts for nothing because what do we know. I think we can discuss this for 20 years but some people simply live in the dark and never see the light :(

I know some one may have already asked, but ......

do stars get taken away??   You have somw w/ 4 - 5 stars and have not posted or answered on a long while.....Do you loose them??

I too am quite concerened about the stars and Best Answers issue.....
Have any of you noticed that some people will answer a question to a post repeating what others have already said???  Guess they want those stars!

Mr.Green,  I totally agree w/ you on what you call Post Notching!!

If they did I bet we could build enough stars to start prescribing medication.
