Skin discoloration on Leg

I have a spot on my leg that has enlarged slowly over the past few years. It started out about 1/4inch in dia and is now approx 3/4in. When you run your finger across it, it feels like a you cross a ridge and inside the spot itself is very smooth. I have seen medical professionals, generalists and dermatologists, concerning this but they do not have any idea as to what it is. They say they don't think that it is a problem but they are not sure. Has anyone else experienced this or have an idea to what it is and the significance?

I am surprised that a dermatologist would not be able to help. I think that someone in doubt would suggest a biopsy of the lesion to see what they are dealing with. I'd encourage you to look for a dermatologist at a major academic center (ie university hospital). Good luck!
