No REM cycle

by monotreme, Jan 16, 2009 09:25AM
My husband has Primary Progressive MS.   He has extreme day time fatigue and the doctor ordered a sleep study.  It was done last night and the tech said that he does not cycle through the different sleep cycles.  He only went into REM cycle once and only for ten minutes.

He does wake up very frequently through the night.  What can be done to help a person enter into sleep cycles?  Could this be neurological and be caused by the MS?

Thank you,
Elaine

The sleep doctor who scored the test can address this questions since he/she can assess the medical history, including MS, in light of the results.

Sometimes sleep studies are atypical due to the novelty of the sleep lab and the “first night” effect. If the sleep doctor sees that your husband obtains a normal amount of sleep, gets the other stages of sleep, but skips REM, he would likely tell you that is abnormal and would discuss whether this would due to MS and what, if anything, can be done.
