According the the American College of Obstetric & Gynecology ACOG Practice Bulletin Number 44, July 2003:
"For women at high risk of NTDs, or who have had a previous pregnancy with an NTD, folic acid supplementation of 4 mg per day is recommended:
NTD means neural tube defect which is what your baby had with Spina bifida.
Your doctor may not know this.
Your doctor may not be an obstetrician-gynecologist and I recommend that you see an OB/GYN if you can.
If you really have PCOS, your chances of pregnancy without some type of treatment would be low. If you have PCOS, I suggest that you see a specialist called a Reproductive Endcrinology and Infertility specialist who can design a plan to help you get pregnant.
If you had a previous pregnancy with Spina bifida, I imagine that you received genetic counseling and that your next pregnancy would be followed closely with a targeted ultrasound.
You also probably know that you should be on increased doses of folic acid ie at least 4mg before you even start to try to get pregnant.
Thanks Doctor. I will be taking a proper dose of folic acid. Thanks a lot for replying me.
Hi,
Thanks for your advice. Yes I have PCOS , but I conceived on my own during my first pregnancy. My family physician told me to try for 6 months, if there is no luck then she will refer me to gyn...
I am hoping for some miracle to happen as it happened earlier to me.......
I have requested my doctor to prescribe me high dose of folic acid, but she is telling 800mcg of folic acid that I have in prenatal is sufficient. What I can do in this case?
Can I get prescription from else?
