I’m confused about my FSH levels

by lyasanz, Jul 27, 2009 05:11PM
I got tested in a fertility clinic about a year ago to see why I was having problems with getting pregnant (been trying for four years). The results were that the levels of FSH were too high for a woman my age and that could mean that the quality of the egg or quantity was not good. They recommended In-vitro but we decided to get a second opinion. The second doctor said the same thing. The levels were about 24 from what I can remember and the test were done three days into my cycle.
I had given up to the idea of getting pregnant but now my OBGYN (another doctor) because he was curious. The test was done 18 days into my cycle or Lutheal phase. The results were:
FSH 23.4 mIU/mL
Estradiol 136 pg/ml
He told me that these numbers are normal and there is no problem with me. But when I got home all exited and started to google the results they most of the sites say that the levels are too high.
I’m confused Is this a high level or a normal level for a woman of 28 years old. My menstrual cycle is irregular but I do get them.

You must do a cycle day 2 or 3 FSH and Estradiol level to make a determination of how old your ovaries are.  A cycle day 18, does not mean as much and would be difficult to interpret.  If you are 28 years old the cycle day 2 or 3 FSH and Estradiol is less predictive of the possibility of you getting pregnant.  So your age is something positive but if the FSH is elevated that is negative.  I would use it to decide to proceed with fertility treatment aggressively and not wait.
