Irish decent

Irish decent

Thank you so much for your help and information with my last question... I am very curious about what you said about the increased need for Folic Acid associated with Irish decent. Are there commonly more neural-tube complications associated with being from this ancestral heritage than others? If so, why is that?  I do have some Irish/Welsh but the majority is Scottish from both parental lines. In fact, my paternal great-grandfather was full-blooded Scotch. Because I know the two are closely related, would a Scottish decent pose the same potential risk as Irish? How far back does the decent effect the probability of risk for these defects?
-Thank you for your time and information.

Yes, people of Celtic descent (Scot, Irish, Welsh) would be considered to have a higher risk of neural tube defects. I do not know the reason. Please check with your OB/GYN to determine how much folic acid, they would recommend for you.
