Anxiety of Blood in Urine

Anxiety of Blood in Urine

Hi, back in September I had a bad cold and also a UTI. I was put on the antibiotic Bactrim then within 36 hours I was urinating large amounts of bright red blood. I went to the hospital and they added a second antibiotic. Since then I have had on and off dull achy pain in my upper left kidney that stretches around to my left side. It has been three months and I have been on and off 5 antibiotics and have had horrible side effects... vomiting, severe acid reflux I can't get rid of. Bloody nose, red burning eyes, raw blistered tongue and blood in my urine. Most of the time the blood is microscopic but sometimes it looks like dark tea or cola. I have spent over $700 in copays going to Doctors. I have had 2 CT scans one with iodine, xray of back and abdomen, MRI, cystoscopy, biopsy, colonoscopy, multiple urine cultures and blood work. I have been to my Gyno who thinks I may have endometriosis and my Urologist thinks I may have Cystitis. he saw that my bladder was inflamed but not too badly. So I have been sent home and am still having the kidney pain and blood in my urine with nothing else to do but wait. I do get some bladder pain the day after intercourse but it goes away for the most part the day after that. So my anxiety is through the roof. Could the antibiotics have caused all this inflammation? I never had any of these problems ever before and they all came on suddenly after taking bactrim. I have tried multiple medications for the acid reflux and it just masks the symptoms but they always come back when I try to stop taking the medications. also I used to run half marathons but my muscles won't let me anymore. To top it off My husband and I were trying to get pregnant. Should we start trying again or wait and for what? I am not supposed to see my urologist for 6 more months so how will I know if the blood in my urine goes away. I am at my wits end. I just need someone to tell me if this is going to get better or kill me. Thanks

It is common for patients with IC to initially have a very bad bladder infection, that causes damage to the bladder lining with bleeding and severe pain.  The infection is treated and follow-up cultures are normal but the bleeding and symptoms continue.  This is classic for Interstitial Cystitis.  It's an inflammatory problem of the bladder triggered by an initial injury to the bladder wall.  You have had a full structural work up so this is not a cancer, or kidney stone or other potentially harmful problem. Antibiotics do not cause this problem but you may have had a separate problem of an allergic reaction to the bactrim. You could have multiple problems like IC and endometriosis.  The question is,what did the doctor see when he looked into your bladder?  Did he see the bleeding spots or ulcers on the bladder?  Did your Urologist start you on a treatment specific for IC?  Go to the website "ichelp.org" to get the lattest info on diagnosis and treatment.  There are some other things this could be.  You need to be seen by a urologist who specializes in IC/Female Urology to get the proper workup to rule in or rule out IC.  The website can help you find an expert in your area.  Good Luck
