cysto retrograde for IC diagnosis

Dear Doctor Burks

Can a Cysto retrograde rule out IC.  I have had burning, frequency and pain and the urologist has ruled out IC due to the fact that the symtoms came on suddenly and he did not see anything with thecysto  retrograde.  The lab lost the initial urine test so we do not know if their was an infection or not however I did finish a course of antibiotics. This all started almost two months ago. I started taking Cysto Q a week ago and the sysmptoms have almost fone away.
The doctor believes my symptoms were the left over effects of a bad uti.  My questions are can a cysto retrograde rule out IC and how long should  contiue taking the cysto q and following the IC diet

Thanks for your help

Hi, A cysto-retrograde does not rule in Interstitial Cystitis but it can rule out a stone in the lower ureter if one is suspected, plus a bladder tumor or bladder stone that can mimic the symptoms of IC.  Usually if IC is suspected a cystoscopy and hydrodistention (bladder stretching with water) can demonstrate the changes in the wall of the bladder seen usually in IC.  The most common cause of frequency/urgency and pain is a UTI, and the systems can persist after treatment with an appropriate antibiotic.  IC is a chronic condition and you have to have symptoms for at least 3 months with urine cultures documenting no infection while you are having symptoms.  You may have some type of bladder hypersensitivity problem but it doesn't sound like full blown IC yet.  Go off the Cysto Q and see what happens.  Hopefully the symptoms will not return. Good Luck.
