Cyst?

Hi my name is Jenna, I have strange question. My boyfriend has been complaining about his elbow over the last year. States he can feel cartilage grinding together with motion. Today he woke up with almost like a perfect circle soft mass under the skin directly over the elbow joint. It reminds me of a cyst but seems rather large(bigger then 50 cent piece). Any suggestions?
