Fentanyl patch for chest pain

I'm asking a question for my father who is 80 years old. He has chronic chest pain since years, he's been in hospital  many times. He took a lot of Nitro in his life, he had triple bypass surgery many years ago .He also has arythmia, pulse being very low .He tried many medications in his life. His cardiologist is now ordering Fentanyl patch 12.5 mcg to help him with his chest pain. Even with his age he is still independant , driving a car etc. I am worry because of his age and side effects. Is Fentanyl a new treatment , is it use often for chest pain?

Thank you for your input

This is an old treatment and it is for pain relief --it is a long acting narcotic which is quite effective for pain control.  It does not treat the heart condition it merely helps with the symptoms.
