Mitral Valve prolapse

by ANNA1971, Apr 26, 2008 05:40PM
I have been in the ER twice this month for sinus tachycardia, shortness of breath and chest pain. All labs are normal, EKG normal and stress echo normal.  I followed up with a cardiologist who listened to my heart and told me that I had a pronounced click and had a prolapsed mitral valve.  He is doing a cardiolyte test just to rule out any other problems.  Can a mitral valve prolapse go undected by a stress echo? And can it really cause all these symptoms?  I am currently on toprol XL 25mg twice a day, and the symptoms are somewhat better controlled. I am 55 years old, normal weight and cholesterol panel, exercise daily and a vegetarian.
Thank you.

Yes MVP could be missed on stress echo but it is unlikely. As for your symptoms yes they could be due to MVP or other problems.
