Flat stool and Metamucil

Ok I am a 33 year old overweight male. I have been having varying bowel movements from thin and flat to diarrhea for almost 2 years.

I have been to the Dr office and they say that those symptoms are probably IBS/stress related

I started taking Metamucil and it makes my bowel movements go back to normal.

When I miss a day my stool goes back to thin/flat.

My question is:

If Metamucil helps me to pass a normal stool, what is causing my stools to revert back to thin/flat when I dont take it? Wouldnt a tumor or obstruction cause the Metamucil created stool to come out thin/flat as well?

And the green diarrhea is no fun either.

My doctor says that a colonoscopy isnt needed. Is there a way for me to make the Dr order one just for peace of mind?
